Along with the firmware update 1.10 released today for its GFX Eterna 55 cinema camera, Fujifilm has unveiled a firmware roadmap outlining upcoming feature upgrades through early 2027. While the current version primarily improves stability and operability, the planned updates include significantly more interesting features, such as automatic control of the electronic variable ND filter, MXF playback, and LANC support. Version 1.10: Bug fixesThe update addresses several bugs—most notably an issue with color rendering: previously, when using PL lenses via the included PL-mount adapter, a white balance shift could occur—this affected both Fujifilm&s own PL lenses that had not yet been updated to Eterna 55-compatible firmware, as well as lenses from third-party manufacturers. A caveat from Fujifilm: those currently in the middle of a project should wait until filming is complete before installing the update, as the color tone of footage already shot could otherwise shift retroactively.
In addition, the new firmware brings generally improved stability and operability for menu operations and recording under certain conditions, as well as improvements to display accuracy, timecode, and monitor behavior in specific recording and playback situations.  Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 Version 1.20: MXF playback and Open Gate desqueeze coming in 2026Version 1.20, announced for this year, will bring in-camera playback of MXF files, backup and restore of camera settings via a dedicated app, and a further reduction in SDI/HDMI video latency—following the approximately 40 ms reduction already achieved in firmware 1.04. Also relevant for practical use is the expansion of anamorphic desqueeze options, which will cover Open Gate 4K 4:3 in the future. The 4:3 Open Gate format is one of the camera&s core strengths, as the tall sensor allows the full height to be used for anamorphic optics without cropping. Version 1.30: Automatic ND filter and LANC from January 2027The most exciting feature, however, will not arrive until January 2027 (or later): the camera will then be able to automatically adjust the density of the electronic ND filter while keeping aperture, shutter angle, and ISO constant. This would allow for iris pulls to achieve specific depth-of-field changes without altering exposure—a feature previously known primarily from Sony&s cinema cameras. Additionally, there will be extra presets for coarse ND adjustment, LANC support for external controllers, and remote control of Fujinon Duvo lenses via the multi-function dial on the body and handle.
