With the second version of its NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II telephoto zoom, Nikon has released a completely revised lens that brings many innovations. The most spectacular of these is likely the weight reduction of 362 g compared to the predecessor model. This means the new NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II weighs only 998g (without the tripod collar ring) and is likely the lightest, fast telephoto zoom in its class. Compact LightweightThe weight reduction is likely primarily due to a less complex optical construction, which is nevertheless intended to achieve higher imaging performance. The new NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II now consists of a total of 18 lenses in 16 groups (including 1 ED glass, 1 Super ED glass, 2 aspherical lenses, 1 aspherical ED glass, 1 fluorite lens, and 1 SR lens, lenses with Meso-Amorphous Anti-Reflection Coating and ARNEO Coating, and fluorine coating on the foremost lens) – compared to 21 lenses in 18 groups in the predecessor. The length has also been reduced by 12mm compared to the predecessor. Improved StabilizationThe lens&s stabilization function is also said to have been improved, which Nikon now specifies at 6 stops. ![]() We have been observing for some time that Nikon is particularly excelling in stabilization performance in the telephoto range, especially in video mode. For handheld video shots in the telephoto range, Nikon is becoming something of an insider tip with its telephoto lenses – but back to the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II. Faster FocusingThere have also been significant changes to the focus motor: The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II appears to be the first zoom to incorporate Nikon&s SSVCM drive (Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor). In this context, Nikon points to significantly faster focusing (3.5 times faster than the predecessor) and quieter operation (50% reduced noise). Thanks to internal focusing and internal zooming, the balance of the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II hardly changes. Those who require corresponding setups on a gimbal will find a convenient option here. And also related to convenient operation: ![]() The lens collar of the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II features an integrated Arca-Swiss plate for the first time. It is removable and can be replaced by a protective collar that allows for ergonomic handling without the collar. The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II also features a new control ring with a click stop ("On" for tactile feedback. "Off" for smooth, silent, stepless operation), an aperture with 11 rounded aperture blades, and high-quality seals against dust, dirt, and moisture. ![]() The minimum focusing distance is also said to be at the best level in its class, specified at 38 cm at a focal length of 70 mm and 80 cm at 200 mm. The maximum magnification is 0.25x at 70 mm and 0.3x at 200 mm. Like the Power Zoom 28-135mm f/4 PZ, the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II has a lens hood with a filter opening, allowing rotatable filters (like Vario-NDs) to be operated even with the hood attached. ![]() Additionally, the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II includes several programmable L-function buttons (for portrait and landscape orientation ergonomics) and a focus limiter switch. Availability and PriceThe NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is expected to be available in stores in mid-March 2026 with a recommended retail price of EUR 3,349.00. Bild zur Newsmeldung:
