With the announcement of the development of the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, Nikon is adding another very exciting option to its already highly attractive high-end telephoto zoom portfolio. Similar to the F-mount version (AF-S NIKKOR 180–400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR), the new NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S will feature an integrated 1.4x teleconverter, which effectively turns the 120-300mm f/2.8 into a 168-420mm f/3.9, thereby combining flexibility, speed, and compactness.
We see its primary area of application in the sports segment, and here, presumably, especially in lower-light indoor environments. However, wildlife filmmakers and photographers who appreciate a compact, high-quality zoom and tend to focus on larger (or less shy) animals, or who primarily work at dusk or in low-light conditions, should also find the new NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S appealing.
The new Nikkor will not be inexpensive. The AF-S NIKKOR 180–400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR, which is still produced by Nikon, is currently priced at 11,899 euros. We expect the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S to be priced even higher.
One can certainly speak of a dominant position for Nikon in the high-end telephoto range. This also includes the following lenses, which are also equipped with an integrated teleconverter:
NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S (15,329 euros)
NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S (14,589 euros)
In extreme telephoto applications, it is well known that the choice of lens is becoming increasingly more important than the choice of camera system. With the new NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, Nikon is likely to significantly strengthen its market position in sports and wildlife.
We will provide availability and pricing as soon as we have information on them...
