The name of the camera already indicates that on the one hand a new era shall begin, but on the other hand the tradition shall not fall by the wayside. After the spin-off of the OM-Systems from Olympus, this is on the one hand the first "OM-camera" and on the other hand the last model that still carries the old "Olympus" company name. And not only that. Exactly 50 years ago, a camera with the same name, but  analog Olympus OM-1, saw the light of day and wrote a piece of photographic history. At the time, the OM-1 was the world&s smallest and lightest 35 mm SLR. The new OM SYSTEM OM-1, on the other hand, is also interesting for videographers. It has a 20 megapixel 5.2K Quad Bayer Micro Four Thirds sensor from Sony (IMX472) that allows internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording at up to 4k60p and 1080p240. Externally, 120fps 12-bit RAW with 4K DCI resolution is possible, according to the spec sheet.  The specs also said in the fine print that ProRes RAW 4:4:4 (!!) 12bit is supported, which as a RAW user you&d rather smile at. By the way, Atomos has only promised external support up to 4K60p for the OM-1 so far. The Sony sensor is "only" 17.4mm wide, which puts the smallest possible crop factor at 2.07. Other Sony MFT quadbayer sensors, such as those used in the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K or the Panasonic GH5S, have a cropfactor of 1.89 with a width of 18.96mm, which means that they use the MFT image circle much more effectively for film applications.  In return, the sensor of the OM-1 is mounted movably and should be able to correct up to 7 stops, with special Olympus lens combinations even 8 stops should be possible under the catchword "Sync IS". MFT users will be curious about the phase detection autofocus with 1,053 points. Its sensitivity can also be configured in video mode and it can work with various AI algorithms. These not only recognize and track human eyes and faces, but also racing and rally cars, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters and trains, as well as various animal species (cats, dogs, birds). The built-in viewfinder offers 5.76 million pixels, while the 3-inch display is rather mediocre with 1.62 million pixels. Recording is done on SD cards, whereby all internal 4K formats (H.264/H.265) are only available as Long-GOP formats - FullHD, on the other hand, is also available with All-I codecs. Those who record in 10-bit 4:2:2 can record in HLG or Log. That&s right: Contrary to our last information, the OM-1 has its own log format for internal recording. This is called "OM-Log400" (probably in reference to the base ISO). Related LUTs are provided by Olympus also available for download since quite some time.  The camera has "only" audio mini jacks, as well as the smallest Micro HDMI (Type D) connector.
