Olive is a cross-system (Win, Linux, Mac) professional video editor that has been under development as an open source project for about three years. However, the project has been treading water lately - but that wasn&t really the case. Behind the scenes, the program was reprogrammed from scratch as version 0.2. As is often the case with larger software projects, this took much longer than expected, but according to Twitter and the Patreon page, the project is now on the home stretch for the completion of version 0.2. ![]()
In addition to the improved substructure, some new features have now been added that were not previously found in this form in the program. These are among other things an improved WYSIWYG text engine, significantly increased swing cidity on the timeline when moving clips, correct speed changes, a better choma key with despill function, color grading functions, markers as well as keyframe snapping. A very detailed summary of all news can be found on the linked Patreon blog page of the project, which is also readable for non-supporters. It also states about the further future of the project: "Of course, there is still a lot of work ahead. The incomplete implementation of the transition was a big problem (both in terms of usability and stability) that I&d like to address in depth and thoroughly solve/complete next month. Performance could also be improved a bit. When designing/prototyping something, you&re often just writing code to make things work, and not necessarily in the most efficient way. In May, I hope to take a closer look at all the slow points of the rendering system to really get as much performance out of it as possible. Hardware decoding may also be on the horizon, which would definitely help speed everything up. While I can&t give a date for the stable release of 0.2 yet, I can only recommend everyone to check out the latest version. As you can see, a lot of hard work has been put into Olive to get it to market."
