The free video editing programme OpenShot (macOS/Windows/Linux) has been released in a major release as version 3.0 after an update break of almost two years.
Among other things, the new version brings optimised support for 4K displays and HiDPI display devices, greatly improved real-time video playback performance and the ability to export multiple clips and videos simultaneously. The link with Blender (now in version 3.3), which enables direct support for animated titles, among other things, remains unique.
The developers are particularly proud of the improved real-time playback: OpenShot uses a cache background thread that prepares the upcoming images before they are needed. This caching algorithm has been improved to work at different speeds (1X, 2X, 4X) and in both forward and reverse directions. It also now includes a fast-forward function that builds up video frames before playback starts, allowing for smoother playback. Many new cache settings can be made in the OpenShot preferences, and the user can now clear the cache at any time by right-clicking on the playhead and selecting "Cache->Clear All".
