Panasonic LUMIX S1II and S1IIE for Videographers - Up to 15 Stops and ARRI LogC3

[16:02 Tue,13.May 2025   by Rudi Schmidts]

Panasonic has announced two new full-frame hybrid camera models today: The LUMIX S1II is designed to appeal to professional videographers in particular. It features a newly developed 24.1 MP full-frame CMOS image sensor with partial stacking and is powered by a latest-generation Venus Engine. This combination enables particularly high frame rates in formats such as 4K120p or 5.8K 60p. In addition, the camera has an optional Dynamic Range Boost mode, which should enable up to 15 stops in V-Log. However, this is only possible with frame rates up to 30p. The high-speed continuous shooting at up to 70 frames per second should also make the hearts of professional photographers beat faster.

The LUMIX S1II can also record internally in Apple ProRes (RAW) in addition to H.264/H.265 - when using a CFexpress Type B card. Alternatively, formats with lower data rates can also be recorded on an SD card.

The more affordable LUMIX S1IIE comes in the same housing design as the S1II, but has a "simpler" sensor, which is similar to that of the LUMIX S5II. This not only has a slightly lower dynamic range, but the Dynamic Boost feature is also missing from this model. With full sensor readout (6K, 3:2 Open Gate), a maximum of 30p is also possible.

For all new LUMIX S1 models of the second generation, a new Cinemascope video format (Cs4K, 2.4:1) is introduced, which is available up to 60p. This means that fewer lines are recorded compared to 16:9 formats. ARRI LogC3 is also available as a paid firmware upgrade (with the DMW-SFU3A Key) for full-frame models of the second S series for the first time (SII/E).

The Phase Hybrid AF is also said to have been further improved in both models (eye and face recognition as well as AI-controlled tracking accuracy for people). And with the new AF recognition for "Urban Sports", dynamic movements such as breakdancing, skateboarding and parkour should also be able to be captured even more precisely.

The image stabilizer through the moving sensor (B.I.S.) is also said to have been further improved. In addition, Panasonic promises a newly developed stepless E.I.S. video distortion correction that should stabilize without cropping the angle of view.

The new cameras remain compatible with proven accessories from the series (DMW-BG2 or DMW-XLR2) and continue to offer the auxiliary functions important for filmmakers such as waveform monitor, vectorscope or false colors. It is also particularly worth mentioning that all models of the second Lumix S1 generation can now claim a 5-year guarantee free of charge after registration.

The body of the SIIE is available from June 2025 for 2,799 euros, the kit with the S-R24105/F4 lens will cost 3,699 euros. The S1II is also expected to be available from June 2025 for 3,499 euros and also as a KIT with the S-R24105/F4 for 4,399 euros.
