Sennheiser introduces the MKH 8018, a new, compact stereo shotgun microphone specifically designed for broadcast and film applications. The new model complements the company&s MKH 8000 series of RF condenser microphones, which are characterized by their climate-resistant robustness and natural sound recording with high freedom from coloration. ![]() Sennheiser MKH 8018 – New Stereo Shotgun Microphone
The MKH 8018 is housed in a lightweight aluminum casing (115 g), which means less weight is placed on a camera or boom arm. In contrast to most other microphones in the 8000 series, the MKH 8018 is non-modular and equipped with a fixed XLR-5M output as well as an integrated -10 dB pad against overdriving and filters for adjusting the frequency response. A switchable low-cut filter (-3 dB at 70 Hz) also reduces wind and handling noise. ![]() Sennheiser MKH 8018 – New Stereo Shotgun Microphone Since the MKH 8018 was specifically designed for broadcast and film applications, the usually extremely wide frequency response of the MKH microphones was deliberately limited to 40 - 20,000 Hz. This avoids overloading the mixing console with inaudible frequencies below 40 Hz and above 20 kHz, where, for example, ultrasonic-based camera lens measuring systems could be active. The MKH 8018 is designed to impress with a homogeneous sound image and offers special flexibility thanks to three switchable stereo modes: MS stereo, a &wide& XY stereo image and a &narrow& XY stereo image. The MS mode makes it possible to adjust the spatial image steplessly on the mixing console, while the XY modes are pre-mixed in the MKH 8018, with settings that have been fine-tuned in numerous tests. In order to adapt to the acoustic conditions on site, the microphone can be switched between a "wide" stereo image (XY-W, wide), in which more ambient sound is recorded, and a "narrow" stereo image (XY-N, narrow), in which a more focused recording with less ambient sound is achieved. The MKH 8018 comes with an MZQ 100 microphone clamp, an MZW 8018 windshield and a screwable plastic transport tube. The optional MZR 8000 camera adapter encloses the microphone body and ensures a secure fit with other microphone clamps and on cameras. Optional accessories for the microphone include the MZS 20-1 suspension/pistol grip, the MZW 60-1 basket windshield and the MZH 60-1 fur windshield for outdoor use of the MKH 8018. ![]() Sennheiser MKH 8018 – New Stereo Shotgun Microphone All technical data in detail: Microphone type: RF condenser microphone Pick-up pattern: stereo shotgun Frequency response: 40 – 20,000 Hz Low-cut filter (switchable): -3dB at 70 Hz Attenuation (switchable): -10 dB Sensitivity: M channel: 56 mV/Pa; -25 dB ref (1V/Pa) S channel: 25 mV/Pa; -32 dB ref (1V/Pa) XY narrow: 50 mV/Pa; -26 dB ref (1V/Pa) XY wide: 32 mV/Pa; -30 dB ref (1V/Pa) Equivalent noise level: M channel: 12 dB A-weighted; 24 dB CCIR-weighted S channel: 14.5 dB A-weighted; 25 dB CCIR-weighted XY narrow: 12 dB A-weighted; 24 dB CCIR-weighted XY wide: 13 dB A-weighted; 25 dB CCIR-weighted Nominal impedance at 1 kHz: 430 ohms Mi. load impedance: 4.7 kilo-ohms Power supply: P48 phantom powering (IEC 61938) Current consumption: 2 x 3.4 mA Max.
