Sony is upgrading all BURANO cinema cameras in circulation with a newly developed infrared (IR) cut filter. The new filter is designed to significantly improve color reproduction in strong lighting conditions, including sunlight. Previously, there were isolated user reports of atypical color shifts when shooting in intense sunlight or even under controlled studio lighting. This indicates a typical IR pollution problem that other manufacturers have also faced from time to time in recent decades. Blackmagic gained particular attention for the problem at the time, as their first Pocket Cinema Camera had no IR cut filter at all - and tended to dip into brownish hues in bright light.

Sony BURANO - Free Replacement of the Infrared (IR) Cut Filter
Sony was apparently aware of the problem for some time and has promptly developed a new infrared cut filter (IR) that is designed to improve color fidelity in the lighting conditions mentioned. Sony will cover the cost of replacing the filter in cameras that have already been sold and are in use - this applies to the replacement components, the transport of the camera and the working time required to replace the filter.
All owners of a BURANO cinema camera are entitled to this completely free filter replacement - however, it may not even be necessary. This is because the new filter has already been delivered with the latest batch of Burano cameras. Whether your own model still needs a filter replacement can be easily identified:
Cameras with a small notch on the upper part of the front optical filter component (highlighted in red) are already equipped with the new IR cut filter. If this notch is missing, you can still request the replacement until May 31, 2026.
Owners should simply arrange an appointment for the filter replacement by contacting their regional Sony Service Center, contacting Sony by email via primesupport@sony.com (Subject: "Burano IR Cut Filter Exchange" + serial number) or by telephone on +44.203.901.5558 (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. CET). Orders will be processed according to the date they are received.
