Sony is expanding its portfolio of professional shotgun microphones with the new ECM-778, a compact XLR shotgun model specifically designed for use in films, dramas, and documentaries. Thanks to its compact design with a length of only 176 mm and a weight of 102 g, Sony&s new mono flagship model is suitable both as an on-camera microphone and for boom setups in tight spaces. ![]() Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778
The newly developed mono electret condenser capsule, the precision-milled brass acoustic tube, and an improved sound chip work together to deliver, according to Sony, open, transparent highs without unwanted resonances, as well as well-defined mid to low frequencies. ![]() Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778 Polar Pattern Hi-Res AudioThanks to Hi-Res Audio support, an extended frequency range from 40 Hz to 40 kHz beyond the audible range is captured. A dynamic range of at least 117 dB is covered with a self-noise of maximum 16 dB SPL. Polar PatternThe supercardioid polar pattern of the ECM-778 ensures focused capture of sounds from the front and suppresses noises coming from outside the recording axis. Sony emphasizes the consistent sound quality at variable distances to the sound source: Whether 0.5 m or 1.5 m away – the frequency and polar pattern should remain stable, which should lead to consistent results in boom or on-camera setups. ![]() Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778 Low-Cut Filter Low-Cut Filter and Wind ProtectionThe Sony ECM-778 also features a practical low-cut filter on the housing, which helps to minimize wind and impact noise already at the audio source. In addition, the aluminum housing is designed to reduce sensitivity to external vibrations and electromagnetic interference. Two different windscreens are included – a lightweight foam and a fur cover – which provide protection against disturbing wind noise depending on the location (indoor or windy outdoor areas). ![]() Sony XLR Shotgun Microphone ECM-778 Wind Protection The ECM-778 shotgun microphone can be attached to boom poles with the included microphone holder and tripod adapter. Via XLR connection, it can be used with audio recorders and camera systems, such as Sony&s Cinema Line and the mirrorless Sony Alpha system cameras, or together with wireless receivers from Sony&s DWX or UWP series.
