Sony WH-1000XM6: Technically Refined ANC Headphones with a Proven Concept
;) Sony WH-1000XM6 Active Noise Cancellation via QN3 Processor and 12 MicrophonesA central functionality of the WH-1000XM series, developed in collaboration with world-renowned sound engineers, has been improved: with the help of the new QN3 chip, signal processing in the ANC area is up to seven times faster than the previous model. In combination with twelve microphones, the WH-1000XM6 should now analyze ambient noise even more precisely in order to react to it. In everyday use, this is evident through improved attenuation of consistent ambient noises such as office background or fan noise. However, according to initial tests, low-frequency interference sources such as engine noise remain a weak point - here, the performance remains at the level of the predecessor. Sound Profile and Customization OptionsThe sound tuning is broad and designed to cover a wide range of music genres - the reproduction of precise bass and natural voices is said to be particularly good. The maximum frequency coverage ranges from 4 Hz to 40 kHz - including support for Hi-Res Audio via LDAC. Compressed audio files are upscaled in real-time by DSEE Extreme. The sound can be further adjusted via the app using a 10-band equalizer and a special gaming EQ. ;) Sony WH-1000XM6 New Folding Mechanism and Optimized Wearing ComfortAfter the controversial decision to forego a folding function for the first time with the previous model, Sony is returning to the foldable design with the XM6. This makes the WH-1000XM6 more transport-friendly again. In addition, the headband has been revised: wider and better padded, it should make longer wearing more comfortable in combination with softer ear cushions. Battery Life and ConnectivitySony specifies the battery life as up to 40 hours (without ANC) - in a test by CHIP, however, the battery actually lasted for around 58 hours of playback. With ANC activated, the battery life drops to 30 hours according to the data sheet. A quick charge function provides about three hours of music playback in just three minutes of charging, while a full charge takes about 3.5 hours. The WH-1000XM6 uses Bluetooth 5.4, supports multipoint connections (i.e. it can be paired with two (or more) source devices simultaneously) and still offers a 3.5 mm jack for wired operation - practical when the battery is empty. USB-C is used exclusively for charging; digital audio playback via USB is unfortunately not possible. Software Integration and ControlThe associated "Sony Headphones Connect" app remains central to many functions. Among other things, it allows the adjustment of the transparency mode in 20 levels, configuration of the controls, and use of features such as "Speak-to-Chat". Control is via touch gestures on the earcup and buttons - new is a better palpable on/off switch. ;) Sony WH-1000XM6 The technical improvements - especially in ANC and sound processing - should be of interest to many professional and private users.
