According to rumors, Sony is planning to introduce an interesting addition to its Cinema Line at IBC. The internet is buzzing with rumors of an FX8 equipped with a 12K full-frame sensor. However, it is expected that it will not offer 12K recording. Instead, the extra sensor pixels are said to be used for oversampling, similar to the FX9 with its 6K sensor and maximum 4K recording. Speculation suggests that 8K30p or 4K60p will be possible internally as XAVC (full-frame/S35). The 3:2 CMOS with a total of 96MP will be read out in a 16:9 crop (presumably except for anamorphic recordings).
;) A new FX8 could be positioned between the FX9 and FX6. Internal RAW is not expected to be supported. A "Full-Frame Crop" 3.8K 16-bit RAW signal with up to 120p is said to be output via SDI to external recorders. What sounds like a contradiction (full-frame or 3.8K crop would be more logical) could be explained by a processed RAW format in which pixels are combined. Sony has not yet had a camera with a 12K sensor, but Blackmagic has. The URSA Cine 12K is also mentioned in connection with this rumor. It is said that the sensor readout of the FX8 is not as fast as that of the URSA. This suggests that this rumor may be based on a source who already has a finished FX8 at hand and can make corresponding comparisons. But it could also be that this rumored FX8 is completely made up... However, the format table published on Photorumors looks pretty official: ;) A new camcorder is also mentioned in the rumor. Accordingly, a successor to the Z280 "Henkelmann" is to be launched, possibly as early as August.
