LaCie, Seagate&s premium brand, has introduced a new RAID dock aimed entirely at professional users. To achieve optimal transfer speeds, it is equipped with three Thunderbolt 5 interfaces (hence the name: 8 (HDD bays) big Pro (Thunderbolt) 5). With the help of an asymmetric boost mode, these can achieve a (theoretical) data rate of up to 15 GB/s. In real-world use, according to LaCie, it reaches up to 2.8 GB/s (RAID 0) or 2.5 GB/s (RAID 5) — although the 2.8 GB/s is a peak value that can only be achieved under optimal conditions and sequential reading. Also integrated is an additional USB-C port that delivers data via USB at a maximum speed of 20 Gbit/s (2.5 GB/s), meaning a PC connected via USB can utilize the full speed of the 8big Pro5 system. Power can also be supplied via the various USB-C ports: one Thunderbolt 5 port provides 140 W, enough to power a high-performance laptop, while the other two Thunderbolt 5 ports provide 30 W and 15 W at the USB-C port, respectively, for connecting accessories.
