Stephan Follows is a filmmaker and film scholar specializing in data analysis. Every year since 2000, he has watched the 200 most successful live-action films at the box office to see which cameras they use. These data are illustrated by some interesting graphics, which show, among other things, how the use of analogue film cameras declined during this period and was almost completely replaced by digital cameras - it is nice to see how in 2013 more digital cameras were used than analogue cameras for the first time and the difference became bigger and bigger in the following years. ![]() The triumph of digital cameras But even more interesting for us is the overview of the (digital) camera brands used - ARRI is the undisputed number 1, but only with a market share of 42-50%, followed by RED with 9-15%, followed by Sony with 4-7% - but the share of the first two has clearly decreased in the last year of the study (2017), at RED it has almost halved. The successful challenger is Panavision with just 7% and a strong growth trend. The picture becomes even more differentiated when only the 50 most successful films are considered: ARRI dominates here with currently 88% and rising tendency - however, if one considers the 100 most successful films, ARRI only comes to 72% with falling tendency. For RED, on the other hand, the trend looks very gloomy in all three categories: RED has literally crashed in the last two years after continuous growth, in the top segment (50 and 100 most successful films) from around 28% to less than half (13%), in the top 200 segment from 16% to 8%. ![]() RED massively loses market share in the last 2 years What do you mean, you don&t know? Apparently ARRI cameras are being used on the most successful films - you can assume that they are also the films with the biggest budget. The slightly less successful films (Top 100-200) are very different from this segment - here many more different cameras are used. But what are the reasons for the crash of RED? deutsche Version dieser Seite: Die Kameras der Top 200 Filme: ARRI Spitze - RED verliert |
