In a new part of his series about Hollywood film revolutions that came from outside, Phil Edwards tells the story of the first computer-generated images in a film. The designer and artist John Whitney was inspired by photos of the Mariner Mars probe when he was looking for images from a robot&s point of view for the 1973 film "Westworld" (the model for the 2016 television series of the same name). Yul Brynner plays a cowboy killer robot, from whose perspective some scenes in the film are shown.
