Following an initial tease at the Cannes Film Festival in May, DJI has finally officially unveiled its dual-gimbal camera, the Osmo Pocket 4P. However, there is no product page yet, and the camera does not appear in the DJI store—meaning that, unlike in China where it has recently gone on sale, it is not yet truly available. But at least there is now more information about the Osmo 4P, especially regarding a very specific highlight: the previously announced 17 stops of dynamic range, which DJI claims are achieved thanks to the new LOFIC sensor technology in the main Sony camera.
 DJI Osmo Pocket 4P 17 stops of dynamic range via Sony LOFIC technologyThe extremely high dynamic range of the Osmo 4P&s dual-lens gimbal camera is made possible by a brand-new 1-inch CMOS sensor featuring LOFIC and Triple Conversion Gain HDR technology in the main wide-angle camera. This technology, which we reported on just yesterday, comes from Sony and enables unusually high dynamic range in small sensors. However, DJI explains in a footnote to its press release that the 17 stops are only "supported by certain camera modes," i.e., specific resolutions or frame rates. We already know from the slightly smaller 1/1.28-inch Sony LYTIA L910 sensor that it only achieves its high dynamic range when recording at a maximum of 60fps. From this, one can conclude that while the Osmo Pocket 4P can record up to 4K at 240 fps, it does not do so with 17 stops of dynamic range. DJI also combines this high dynamic range with a new 10-bit D-Log 2 color profile.  DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and 4P Two lensesAside from that, the biggest and most visible innovation compared to the Osmo Pocket 4 introduced in April is, of course, the second camera with a 3x optical telephoto lens (12x digital zoom) and a 1/1.5" sensor, which now offers new possibilities for both close-up and long-distance shots. Video is supported by the zoom camera at up to 6K. According to DJI, the 60mm telephoto lens is an f/1.8 optic with an equivalent depth of field of f/6.3, which strongly compresses the background and thus provides a distinct bokeh effect. The main camera with the new Sony 1-inch CMOS sensor (20mm full-frame equivalent, f/2.0) also supports 4K at up to 240 fps for up to 8x slow-motion shots. Additionally, there is a slow-shutter video mode for light trails and motion blur effects.  DJI Osmo Pocket 4P cameras Thanks to its two cameras, the Osmo 4P offers flexible switching between different angles of view or full-frame equivalent focal lengths such as 14mm, 23mm, 28mm, and 70mm. Also on board are two new professional D-Log 2 10-bit color modes as well as a "Live Photo" mode, which automatically records 1.5-second 4K clips for every photo. In addition to MicroSD cards, recording can also be done to the 103 GB internal storage. Gimbal / Tracking / DisplayThe Osmo Pocket 4P comes in a compact 230g housing including a 3-axis gimbal for smooth and stable shots. The improved ActiveTrack 8.0 is designed to keep people, vehicles, pets, or objects with dynamic shapes precisely in the center of the frame, even at 12x zoom. It prioritizes a registered subject or centers multiple subjects at any focal length using automatic framing adjustment. The display is the same as the Osmo Pocket 4: a 2" OLED touchscreen with a resolution of 556 x 314 pixels and a brightness of 1,000 nits, which can be rotated to allow for both landscape and portrait (or vertical video) shooting. DJI Osmo Pocket 4P vs. Insta360 Luna Ultra: Duel of the dual-camsThe comparison of the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P to the Luna Ultra from Insta360 (also just introduced in Germany) is obvious: both rely on a compact gimbal design with a dual-camera setup. Thanks to the LOFIC sensor, the Osmo Pocket 4P can offer 17 stops of dynamic range (though only in some camera modes), while the Luna Ultra reaches up to 14. DJI is also ahead in slow motion—4K240 on the 4P compared to 4K120 on the Insta360, which only reaches 240 fps in Full HD. Furthermore, the Osmo 4P offers D-Log 2, a bright, rotatable 2" OLED with up to 1,000 nits, faster charging, and more internal storage. The Luna Ultra counters with its detachable display, which also serves as a remote control and wireless microphone, and 8K video recording.  DJI Osmo Pocket 4P vs. Insta360 Luna Ultra Price and release date?Although DJI has officially unveiled the Osmo Pocket 4P, it has not yet communicated prices or a release date, and it does not yet appear on the website—however, it can be pre-ordered from many retailers with a deposit of 25 euros.
