Blackmagic Design has unveiled DaVinci Resolve 21, the latest version of its free grading, editing, compositing, and audio mastering program—and now, photo editing has been added to the mix: A dedicated Photo page brings Hollywood’s node-based color grading to the world of photography for the first time. But that is perhaps just the most surprising facet of an update that includes hundreds of new features—from numerous AI tools, each of which would arguably deserve its own news story, to Fairlight folder tracks and the full integration of the Krokodove effect collection into Fusion.  (Editor&s note: Blackmagic does not always specify exactly which features are reserved for the Studio version; we have attempted to add this where known, but it is possible that this distinction may be missing in the following text.)
**The Photo Page – Node-Based Grading for Photos** The completely new Photo page allows users to import, manage, and edit still photos using the entire toolkit of the Color page—including primary correction, curves, qualifiers, power windows, and, of course, the node editor. Unlike the layer-based workflow of Photoshop or Lightroom, you work here with nodes connected in parallel or series, can apply shared nodes across an entire album, or apply different corrections simultaneously to various areas of an image. Those who own a DaVinci Color Panel can also use it for these tasks.  The LightBox view shows the entire album with all grades at a glance; changes made to one image are transferred to the collection in real-time. Albums can be created based on shooting dates, camera models, or custom criteria and then appear as timelines on the Color, Cut, and Edit pages. Thanks to direct tethering support for Sony and Canon cameras, ISO, exposure, and white balance can be adjusted live, and shots can be saved directly into an album.  Resolve FX, Open FX, and LUTs also work on the Photo page. Naturally, the page is integrated into Blackmagic Cloud collaboration: colorists, VFX artists, and editors can work on the same albums simultaneously from anywhere in the world. More details on the new Photo page can be found here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/de/products/davinciresolve/photo **AI Offensive: From IntelliSearch to Face Reshaper** Resolve 21 introduces a whole range of new AI tools, though, as usual, these are limited to the Studio version. IntelliSearch, for example, analyzes media and finds people, objects, or spoken keywords—results appear as entire clips in the Media Pool. The AI Speech Generator creates a spoken voice from written text, either using Blackmagic’s own speech models or trained on a voice sample as short as ten seconds. Speed, pitch, and emphasis can be adjusted. (Blackmagic clearly used this feature itself for the screen-capture presentation of the new Resolve and Fairlight functions.) With AI CineFocus, the focus point of a shot can be artificially manipulated after the fact: a click on the desired area, then you adjust the aperture and focus range—with realistic bokeh effects and selectable aperture shapes. All parameters can be keyframed for synthetic focus shifts.  Three new AI tools allow for post-production facial adjustments that would have previously taken months of work in Hollywood: AI Face Age Transformer ages or de-ages actors (wrinkles, facial fullness) à la Benjamin Button, for example for flashbacks. AI Face Reshaper changes the shape and position of eyes, nose, mouth, and eyebrows in moving subjects. Manual controls allow for precise facial retouching. AI Blemish Removal reduces skin imperfections like acne or spots while aiming to maintain natural skin texture. AI UltraSharpen is, according to Blackmagic, DaVinci’s most powerful sharpening tool to date—it improves upscaled video and is intended to significantly sharpen material that was previously unusable at higher resolutions. It is also said to be able to improve or compensate for minor focusing errors. AI Motion Deblur removes typical motion blur artifacts like streaks or softness, thereby improving slow-motion or freeze-frame effects. Finally, AI Slate ID conveniently recognizes clapperboard details automatically—even in dark or blurry clips—and populates the metadata accordingly. **Fusion: Krokodove is Now On Board** The constantly growing Krokodove toolset for compositing is now fully integrated into Fusion. It has been developed for over 20 years by Belgian developer Raf Schoenmaekers (even before Blackmagic acquired Fusion) and provides over 70 new graphics, utility tools, vector and data tools, as well as customizable 2D/3D templates.  A new "Fairlight Animator" modifier connects Fusion with the Fairlight audio engine, enabling automatic animations based on audio analysis. Audio levels from timeline clips then control parameters such as eye or lip movements—automatic, dynamic animations without manual keyframing. Furthermore, there is a revised Macro Editor with an Inspector view—creating custom tools and templates is now significantly more intuitive. Additionally, the USD toolset has been updated to SDK 25.11 with the Hydra 2.0 API for the Storm renderer (better 3D matte objects, textures, texture projector/catcher). **Fairlight: Folder Tracks and Audio-Driven Animation** The audio page receives long-awaited Folder Tracks: you can group multiple audio tracks into a folder and collapse them into a compact composite view. This saves space on the timeline. When collapsed, mini-rectangles show the number and duration of the clips contained within.  **Color, Editing, Workflow – MultiMaster Trim, Smart Bins, More Keyframe Options** The new MultiMaster Trim Manager creates multiple HDR and SDR outputs from a single timeline. The node editor then shows additional layers for trim operations—you color-manage the timeline for each standard and render all iterations in one pass.  The "Magic Mask" palette now features an option to render in place, allowing tracked masks to be cached as animated matte nodes.  On the Cut page, there are now Smart Bins with complex filters (e.g., only green-tagged .braw clips). New ease animations have been added to the keyframing options, including loop, ping-pong, and relative modes, simultaneous adjustments on multiple clips, and four-point Bezier easing. Fusion effects can be adjusted directly in the keyframe editors of the Cut and Edit pages without needing to switch pages.  Native support for OGraf HTML Graphics and Lottie animations (.json/.lottie) has been added—these are treated like fully rendered animation clips, and alpha channels are recognized. Text+ and MultiText receive multilingual spell checking, font previews, emojis, and character-accurate formatting. IntelliScript now supports Final Draft and plain-text screenplays—upon import, the text is matched with the transcribed audio, and a rough cut of the scene is created automatically. New Media Pool columns allow for five-star ratings and tags like "Good Take" / "Rejected." **Immersive Formats & Miscellaneous** Apple Immersive workflows now support foveated rendering—the GPU renders in high-res only where the viewer is looking, which reduces the load. There are presets for VR180/VR360 for Meta Quest and YouTube VR. Fusion features Panomap for immersive rotation and ILPD retargeting for stereoscopic media. The new Picture-in-Picture Resolve FX quickly places a scalable, frameable video clip over another. **Availability** The public beta of DaVinci Resolve 21 is available for free download from Blackmagic starting now. The final version is expected to be released later this summer. The software can be tested live at NAB 2026 (Booth #N2502).
