According to a report by Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-28/sony-is-said-to-mull-chip-spinoff-that-loeb-called-for-years-ago), Sony Group Corp. is considering spinning off its semiconductor division, including sensor manufacturing. Accordingly, Sony would only retain a minority stake after the spin-off, at least according to a statement from an unnamed source. The rest would probably go to the shareholders of the new company, presumably to the current Sony shareholders who would be involved in the deal.
![]() The spin-off of "Sony Semiconductor Solutions" with a simultaneous IPO is still planned for this year. However, the decision is probably still subject to reservations, as the current market conditions (especially the market volatility as a result of US President Donald Trump&s tariffs) represent a factor of uncertainty. Sony&s chip division is currently the market leader in image sensors and not only installs them in its own cameras, but also sells them across industries to large electronics manufacturers such as Apple, Nikon, Panasonic or Xiaomi. However, growth in the sensor sector has not been as strong in recent years due to weak global smartphone demand. In addition, the company has recently struggled with falling margins, higher costs and new competition from other chip manufacturers. Bloomberg estimates the operating profit margins of Sony&s sensor solutions at just over 10 percent. It used to be 25 percent or more. However, low margins weigh on a company&s overall balance sheet. In contrast, growth and margins in the gaming or music sectors look much better, which is probably the main reason for a spin-off. This step should be particularly pleasing to the direct competitors of the camera division, who have always had to buy Sony sensors with a certain amount of distrust. After all, they regularly gained insight into the competitor&s future camera development roadmap. A separate IPO could additionally build trust here. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Wird Sony bald seine Sensor Sparte ausgliedern? |
