Infoseite // 9 ¬ ExpressCard/34 SDHC card reader from ebay for EX1/EX3

Frage von deti:

As already stated on different web sites you may use ExpressCard/34 SDHC adapters in USB mode for the SonyPMW EX1/EX3:

http://www.xdcamexinfo.com/SDasSxS/index.htm

There are mentioned a couple of express adapters and SDHC cards supposed to work flawlessly within s.EX1/EX3. In the meantime lots of them became unavailable (; especially in europe) and some other web shops sell 'special' EX1/EX3 adapters from 80 up to 100 ¬.

Well, what's so special about these adapters? What do they have in common?
To find out what's inside I bought a couple of them and opened the cover by simply stretching it a little bit and pulling it aside.

All of the known working adapters use the same chip GL827 by Genesys Logic. Unfortunately the presence of a GL827 is not sufficient to make the EX1/EX3 correctly recognize the adapter.

So I got the ch'eapest adapters available from ebay member exgrass called 'ExpressCard/34 Express Card Reader xD / SDHC / SD /' for ¬ 9 and found a GL827 with EX1/EX3 not working. The next step was to find out what's the difference to a working adapter?

Finally I found out it's just one pin that was connected wrong for some reason: An ExpressCard can identify itself s.an USB and / or a PCIe device. For some reason this had pin adapter 17 of the express slot connected which makes the card so a PCIe device. After cutting the connection on the PCB the card got recognized s.smoothly s.any other working adapter.

As we do not have any of the highly recommended but expensive SDHC cards I inserted a low cost one called Class 6 PLATINUM bought last month for about 22 ¬. After pressing the record button on the camera it worked like a charm. No media errors - just s.any other KXS solution.

Here you can find some pictures attached that show the express card 'surgery'. As you can see both SDHC cards need to be Shaved a little bit to fit into the card slot completely - otherwise it is not possible to close the card slot door.

The SonyPMW EX1 / 3 cameras are, contrary to many speculations, not so sensitive to what type of card reader or the SDHC card is concerned. On the other seem to be the most ExpressCard/34-Reader the same chip (GL827) to use.
Only a KO criterion I could find: The ExpressCard slot pin 17 (cp pe #) may not be on low, because otherwise, the Camera via the PCIe-Storage interface to the memory access, resulting in the error message "Media Error "lead (which would be the operation of the SxS cards).
If I have time again, then I use the USB cables directly and try out a USB-SATA adapter with USB analyzer on it to hang. It could well be that such a SATA hard drive will be used directly.

So Sony and even synonymous Provides a hard drive under the name PHU-60K for just under ¬ 800 as accessories to. We have something in the company and this is apparently a USB <-> IDE adapter. There is then a 60Gbyte 1.8 "IDE disk inside of Toshiba. Now the question is how tolerant the firmware to another solution, where as a 500Gbyte 2.5" SATA disk dranhängt. Something like would be included adapter cost about 100 ¬.

The tinkering I do it only for fun - we would probably never use anyone. Here in the forum there's probably one or the other, which is not an infinite amount of money wants to invest and maybe someone can use my knowledge.

Is there an internal Card Reader for SxS cards (EX1/EX3) for PCs?
