What are the alternatives in the price range with a comparable zoom are there? Perhaps in even smaller? Are there "vest-pocket camera" with a zoom greater than 10x?

Well my opinion is the noise in the S 3 IS does not become significantly better than the old S 2 IS. Yes good man can edit with a program .... Pocket? Yes because a lot better fits Panasonic TZ 1, although there the highlights - stereo recording, Picture / Video Recording and Syncron 0 cm minimum focusing distance (in my opinion anyway nonsense as synonymous 5 cm and 0-1 cm in many harsh shadows are visible.
AF & optical zoom (video) is synonymous to TZ 1 just like the S3 IS, so the 4 practical R 6 Batteries not use the TZ 1, but thank God for the TZ 1 has a battery remaining display, actually a cheek even in the top of Canon Digi SLR S 3 IS not give up this function.
