As media files to OMF or MXF commonly are referred to files that are on disk. In this file the master clips, so what you have in your Bins and use it to refer cutting.
And basically you've been right: The media files, so MXF and OMF files, you typically save on a separate plate, of course, preferably a RAID system. In our house there is a UNITY. Application Files and Projects are on another local hard drive.
