Personally, I use x264 because open source, free software, and according to various tests, always in the top group to find. However, H264 is not stuck in Avicontainer because this format is much more advanced features not supported: ie MP4 or Matroska container choose.
At best you are going in the Umcodierung with the cli version via command line, or alternatively, I would use MeGUI.

Profound post, but too freaky. Command? Linux? For me a horror. Sowas of benutzerunfreundlich, but free. H.264 is for distribution purposes, but really the best at the moment.
