I have recently completed the transition of my SonyHI-8 camcorder to a Panasonic SD-66 and I decided that for the AVCHD format or AVS/H.264.
Now I would like to synonymous (finally) digitize my Hi8 tapes. Possible ways are known in principle.
A few years ago on the way and Canopus DV codec was recommended (with TBC). Is it still relevant? I would even then only in the DV codec digitize and then convert it (for space reduction) in AVS/H.264 or MPEG2. With it comes to archiving of the raw material for processing would add further recalculations (quality?).
Actually I am looking for direct route or a high-quality digitization in "uncompressed" with sound synchronization for further conversion into a space-efficient codec. So a box with S-video - analog and digital audio input and output in the form of an avi file.

The road was never up to date, unless you're an editor and fears for advertising revenue to assert the opposite ;-)
First of DV has ever ansich disadvantages in the codec. The 4:2:0 sampling is implemented differently than MPEG2 and out (as opposed to MPEG2 MP @ ML, where one of 4:2:0 does nothing) to podium along diagonal color contours. 4:2:0 was also totally unnecessary, was in time as DV, it would directly synonymous with 4:2:2, and thus a good Mbit longer the good old M-JPEG (of which IT is only a verschlimmbesserte development) may remain.
The second is the Canopus device. The TBC (a chip of Panasonic) is incorrectly implemented and may, for certain image disturbances lead to heavy distortion. Edirol hit was synonymous of the problem. The picture can be interference devices without proper TBCs or full-screen TBCs absolutely cold.
You can get you a used Digital8 camcorder on eBay. (I could not believe the 270) The larger models read it and give synonymous Hi8 digital over Firewire. But here synonymous with DV only the usual disadvantages. But it's just simple.
Or are you going s.deinem Hi8 device the way over USB (was decent as Pinnacle USB -500 - built-up components are acceptable, and Uncompressed recording is synonymous with Virtual Dub's), video card (Blackmagic Intensity Pro or DeckLink Extreme), SDI (Lynx Yellow Brick or Blackmagic Mini Converter via Decklink SDI), or if you are very daring HDMI (eg Pioneer PDA-V100HD via Blackmagic Intensity - I have not tried but if it works - the Pioneer scaler I, super quality, but no see Intensity HDMI card or other order whether it is able to record synonymous s.PC). Here you get a rule Uncompressed material which you must then convert it. The advantage s.Uncompressed: You before the lossy compression can still filter what it's worth.

I once searched for the USB -500 and the Black Magic Intensity Pro. Both are acceptable solutions, thanks for the info. The Pinnacle seems to have been replaced by the Studio MovieBox HD or the HD Studio 14 MovieBoard PCI. This software is synonymous. The Black Magic is very interesting, but may be oversized, because I do not use the encoder functionality so wants.

Yes, that's my approach. I plan times the first attempts made by a graphics card. Has Hi8 in "UYVY (packed 4:2:2)" digitized, appealing quality. Video / audio sync I have not tested. No Jitter Effects. Problem are more speed cameras, small bright dots on a line or two and one, two pictures. I could remove with VirtualDub filters. This way need to be improved.
The graphics card is not installed in the current PC, and sound was separated on sound card.
Obviously UYVY 4:2:2 is not pure, but packed, right? What is important? Ideal would be if I could edit the material with 4:2:2 VirtulDub filter.
