Infoseite // First Short Film Project - How to simulate s / w-movie from 40s?

Frage von fLOh:

Hello!

I plan in the summer of my first short film (spin 5 minutes) to. Here I would like to shoot the film with a simple MiniDV Cam. For the style of the work I thought s.The way in which black and white movies from the 40s looked (possibly including smaller "film bug"). Can someone give me tips on how I could create in post production with this look?
Thank you very much.

THE black and white film from this period do not exist, but in contrast to today
- Were more movies in 4:3 format.
- Was considered a lot of depth of field (which our DV cam) to provide free home.
- The camera was often stubborn and motionless on the tripod,
- If it was not pushed very elegantly by Dolly:
- That is generally more cumbersome camera work without the zoom.
- Extreme Wide Angleoder extreme telephoto were frowned upon,
- The latter mainly because it took away depth of field.
- Has either played with dramatic light and shadow (lowkey)
- Or almost everything shadowless illumination (help icon).

That is, the imitation of natural light was not the goal.

Highkey: The depth of field is created by MORE LIGHT And while smaller aperture. Nevertheless, a slight blur can not hurt. Nor can the postpro some contrast can be taken out.

Lowkey: High depth of field is achieved with very strong light. Optimally, however, would be very expensive to use a red filter. This makes human skin look very bright. In women, people saw it as desirable that men should apply, however, a darker make-up. If we get out in the postpro the color, the effect is amazingly authentic. But I recommend that before making a test. In the recording would be a mono monitor of advantage.
The fact that both types of lighting require strong light (Lowkey could be today with) produce a 15 W desk lamp, in order to contribute genuinely to be explained by the low sensitive film material and the slower lenses this time.

Overexposure should be avoided at all costs.

Even more than a distorted picture noise TON features old movies: Lower frequency range (less bass and treble). In addition, the Microphones were so small sensitive that the actors had to speak very loudly. This can be achieved in the recording by aussteuert accordingly. The sound can be safely taken something too soft, if you later nachpegelt the dialogues, we reach a fairly realistic distortion.

First of all thank you for the answers.

With Movie Maker, I'll occupy myself at first, but I will soon be talking with "better" programs.
My synonymous camcorder has a feature where you can hold the same in mono, but that is to me rather less useful. I want to make in the post-production in order to be more flexible.

In any case, thanks for the tips and I will be happy to return back to the offer and notify me again, if you encounter new questions!

FUCK to the Movie Maker!
Look at ordinary rather Free and shareware programs at! The Movie Maker is very monotonous, and suitable at most a very easy project to make nachzuamendes
