From big hurry - Seagate hard disks hack of rudi - 25 Jul 2009 08:53:00
This nice hack one hand, sounds almost unbelievable, other synonymous quite logical. The site has Techwarelabs with (to the Seatools a 1.5 TB of Seagate disk; 7200.11 ST31500341AS) artificially reduced to 300 GB. Sounds not particularly cool. The Gag s.der thing is that they can effectively use only the fastest areas of the hard drive. In the benchmarks was then carried out the modified plate then at least twice as expensive (; and synonymous only 300 GB) Western Digital Velociraptor often significantly behind. The latter has led many benchmark lists to unchallenged. So if you need better speed instead of space eg, for the portion of the system, here's a good opportunity to tune his system.

I think at doing this, very interesting. Mainly because I hate anyway more 300 gb have in my computer.

300 GB in a computer - too much or what?

Antwort von deti:

... no conclusive argument, because space can actually never have enough, so long as the data is safe.

Unfortunately, the article was about 8 years too late.

here an article of 2001, of the procedures (and it is called "short stroking") already described: http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200112/20011212short_stroke.html

who is googling for the term, receives hundreds of articles and forum entries about. The quintessenz varies in many tests, incidentally. Some come to the result that it would be a waste of space, since today's pull festplatten by their type of "zone recordings" no big or sometimes no advantage of short stroking. Who sowas will therefore attempt on his plate, it should test both variants. otherwise you might give away hundreds of gigabytes and has no speed advantage of it.

What speaks against simple s.anfang one 300gb partition the disk speed to reach there and make all non-relevant operations?

The same speed as in the artificial crippling, but you still receive the remaining 1200gb.

Oh yes, one problem though. at the "intelligent" method of the program - the so test the whole disk and not just a partition - then not so high values indicate - and they would have the same speed is real but you could not write articles as a weak-minded. sowas but synonymous.

The largest hirnkack I've heard for a long time ...
