no preference, it is exactly as you suspect. There are masks are animated. With effects such as stroke or animate, paint or plug ins like trapcodes 3 d stroke. It is absolutely no preference how complex the structures are, so the image is perfect.
Point program to transform objects into paths is an illustrator.
