- MiniDV tape in the camera insert - Camera via FW with PC - Power supply to ensure - Systems start - PC: Start recording software - PC: recording software to configure - PC: Software Recording to start recording (if necessary so that the Reproduction of the camera remotely) - Camera: if not of remote PC, manual playback launch - Wait until the end - File conversion, if necessary, if the format should be changed ready.
So something should be synonymous in the instructions to read.

there is a tiny program called WinDV that with many cameras works (eg with my Panasonic) and does nothing more than the Camera to the serial line, play the tape and the data on the 1:1 hard drive to scoop. A small preview window is synonymous available.
If need be, I'm going to send the particle synonymous, is freeware.
Oh yes: In MPEG-2, I would convert only if this format necessarily is required (for example, as the basis for DVD authoring). Else There is regarding quality compression ratio is significantly Better, eg XViD or, in accordance with powerful hardware, H.264.

Over a Firewire.Kabel and if you do not elaborate cut need with the program, which Windows it. Movie Maker
