1 TB CFexpress for 240€? Adapter turns SSDs into cheap CFexpress type B cards

[12:01 Fri,11.February 2022   by Thomas Richter]

The Chinese manufacturer Sintech has developed an interesting new adapter, which makes it possible to use commercially available M.2 NVMe SSDs in the 2230 form factor as a CFexpress Type B card. The Sintech PA-CFEBM2-S adapter itself costs about 44 dollars (without shipping from China) and is supposed to work with cameras like Panasonic&s S1/S1R, Canon&s EOS R5/1DX, C300 Mark III, C500 Mark III as well as Nikon&s Z6/Z7/D5/D500/D6/D850 and support the interface&s full speed of (practically about 1,700 MB/s) (the actual read and write speed depends on the SSD used).

So, with the help of the adapter, a 512 GB CFexpress Type B card (based on a Western Digital SN520 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD ) would only cost about 150 Euro and a 1 TB version with a KIOXIA BG4 M.2 2230 SSD only about 240 Euro - normally, CFexpress memory cards are a lot more expensive. The adapter is quite easy to use, but thermal paste has to be applied to the cooling fins of the small SSDs before mounting the SSD into the adapter.

CFexpress card: M.2 2230 NVMe SSD plus PCIe 3.0 interface

.
In fact, even official CFexpress cards (Type B) are nothing more than M.2 2230 NVMe 1.2 compliant SSDs with a 2-lane PCIe 3.0 interface. However, the M.2 2230 format is somewhat rare because it is specifically intended for use in particularly thin notebooks and is mainly used by OEMs when assembling them. NVMe SSDs in the special 2230 format can be used, but not all 2230 SSDs are supported - however, Sintech lists some successfully tested models such as the Western Digital WD SN520, PC SN530,Toshiba KBG30/KBG40 or Samsung PM991.

But beware

.
When using the Sintech SSD to CFexpress Type B adapter, however, be careful: not without reason are official CFexpress memory cards quite a bit more expensive than their bare components. Priced in are extensive compatibility and reliability tests, by the manufacturers, which guarantee the safety of the often very elaborate or even unrepeatable recordings on the memory cards, even in continuous operation. Thus, when using the Sintech adapter, it is left to the user to extensively test his individual solution himself and to assess the risk of data loss of a shoot for himself.
