Dell has announced two new 27-inch monitors in the UltraSharp series, which are equipped with IPS Black panels and run at a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. IPS Black display panels come from LG and are said to offer deeper black reproduction compared to typical IPS panels. Instead of the usual 1000:1, the contrast is said to double to around 2000:1. In addition, according to LG IPS Black, such panels should also have an improved viewing angle and better color gradation.
There were already two 4K Ultrasharp models in 27 and 32 inches with IPS Black panels, but these only allowed a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The new Ultrasharp 27-inch monitors U2724D and U2724DE, on the other hand, can operate at up to 120 Hz. However, these are not panels with native 4K resolution, but "only" 2.5K displays with 2560 x 1440 pixels in a 16:9 ratio.
Despite a better black level, the displays are not as bright as OLEDs and shine at a maximum of 350 cd/m². However, with 1.07 billion colors, they should support true 10-bit and be able to display around 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color space with dE <2. The gray switching times are specified as 5 milliseconds in all modes, which is usually sufficient for video applications.
Both monitors also offer PbP and PiP functions if multiple video sources are used. However, there are no special gaming functions such as a VRR mode.
The Dell U2724D and DE
The only difference between the two models is connectivity. The Dell UltraSharp U2724D offers 1x DisplayPort 1.4-In, 1x DP-Out, 1x HDMI, 1x audio output, 1 USB Type-C data port with 15 W PD and a USB hub with 1x USB-C upstream for 3 USB ports.
The appended "E" in the type designation promises an additional Thunderbolt 3 port - which offers DP-Alt, 15 W power supply, Ethernet transmission and KVM functionality. However, this costs 170 US dollars extra. Speaking of prices:
The Dell UltraSharp U2724D and U2724DE will cost 479 US dollars and 649 US dollars respectively. Euro prices and availability for Europe have not yet been announced.
