With the new Osmo Action 6, DJI is introducing two features unusual for action cameras: a variable aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.0 and a newly developed square 1/1.1" sensor. This improves dynamic range and light sensitivity in low-light shooting situations. ![]() DJI Osmo Action 6 Variable Aperture: A First for DJI Action CamsThe biggest improvement in the new Osmo Action 6 is arguably the new aperture, as it offers a selectable aperture range (Auto mode) and a fixed f/2.0 mode for the first time, instead of the usual fixed aperture. This is rare in the action cam segment and opens up two practical advantages: for low-light shots, the wide-open aperture of f/2.0 is recommended for shorter shutter speeds in low light, which should produce significantly better results than the Osmo Action 5 with its fixed f/2.8 aperture. If more depth of field is desired, the aperture can be stopped down to f/4.0. ![]() DJI Osmo Action 6 New Sensor, New Aspect RatioCompared to previous DJI action cameras with a 1/1.3" sensor, the new 1/1.1" square sensor—a proprietary DJI development—is significantly larger. It provides more headroom in high-contrast scenes and now features a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops and 2.4 μm large binned pixels. For post-processing, the Osmo Action 6 offers 10-bit and D-Log M, just like its predecessor. An on-screen D-Log preview is intended to facilitate exposure assessment during recording. Custom Mode with Square 4K 3,840 x 3,840A new 4K Custom mode allows "film first, crop later," meaning subsequent reframing into multiple formats. The master is recorded in 1:1 4K at 3,840 x 3,840 pixels at 24/25/30/48/50/60fps, from which other formats such as 4:3 4K at 3,840 x 2,880, 16:9 4K at 3,840 x 2,160, or vertical 9:16 4K at 2,160 x 3,840, as well as various versions at 2.7K and 1080p up to 120 fps, can be generated. Previously, only DJI&s new 360-degree camera, introduced a few months ago ![]() DJI Osmo Action 6 Pre Recording, Timecode, Control, and RuntimeThe Pre-Rec function allows recording up to 5 minutes before the actual recording starts, ensuring no unexpected moments are missed. The integrated Timecode function allows synchronizing footage from multiple cameras. The ability to easily live stream online via Wi-Fi using the Mimo app is practical. The Osmo Action 6 is controlled via the integrated OLED touchscreens (a 1.46" display on the front with 342×342 pixels and a maximum brightness of 800 nits, and a 2.5" screen on the back with 400×712 pixels and a peak brightness of 1000 nits), the app, or touchlessly via gesture or voice control. The runtime of the Osmo Action 6 remains the same as the previous model at 4 hours. Quick charging allows reaching an 80% battery level in 22 minutes and 100% in 52 minutes. Stabilization and Slow MotionDJI has also not changed the image stabilization area—the Osmo 6 relies on the predecessor&s technology with RockSteady 3.0 stabilization and the HorizonSteady function, which keeps the horizon level in the image—even when the camera is subjected to strong tilts. In some special modes, such as SuperNight, Timelapse, and Slow Motion modes, electronic image stabilization is not available or only partially usable. Slow-motion recording is natively possible up to 4K/120 fps—the 32x 960 fps super slow motion is generated via interpolation from 1080p240fps footage with a tap. ![]() DJI Osmo Action 6 Special Sensors for Underwater RecordingUnderwater recording is possible down to 20 meters without a housing and up to 60 meters with a special housing, as before. Specifically for such recordings, the Osmo Action 6 (like the 5 Pro) has both a color temperature sensor, which ensures more realistic underwater color reproduction, and a water pressure gauge for live display of depth and dive duration, the values of which can be overlaid onto the video. Audio: Direct Mic Connection Without ReceiverNew is OsmoAudio, meaning two DJI microphone transmitters can be paired directly with the Action 6 via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for an additional receiver—practical for audio recording from two people. Integrated into the Osmo Action 6 is a 3-microphone array that delivers stereo sound—an algorithm reduces wind noise. ![]() DJI Osmo Action 6 with Macro Attachment Optional Optics: Macro and FOV BoostDJI offers two optional optical attachments for special shots: a macro lens for short distances and shallow depth of field, and an FOV Boost lens that expands the native max. 155° field of view to 182°.
