AMD Ryzen Threadripper (Pro) 7000 - Workstation also as HEDT midrange again

[13:57 Fri,20.October 2023   by Rudi Schmidts]

The PC market has been split into the so-called desktop and workstation market for quite some time. The latter was originally intended for professional video editing, among other things, but there have been major paradigm shifts in the last few years, which have really shaken up the structure of the X86 CPU world.

A typical workstation is still characterized by a server-like processor with particularly numerous connection options and fast RAM. In other words: Many CPU cores, many PCIe lanes and many RAM channels.

While laptops and simple desktop computers can only connect two RAM channels and usually only one fast GPU, workstation boards provide 8 to 12 memory channels and can usually connect up to seven GPUs quickly via up to 128 PCIe lanes.

All of this, of course, comes at a corresponding cost. The prices for a single motherboard are often over 1000 Euros and the prices for a processor can even reach five figures.

Until a few years ago, there was therefore another market segment between desktop and workstation: The so-called HEDT (high-end desktop) segment. Here you usually found 4 channel memory and installation options for up to 3 GPUs.

However, after Intel no longer actively played this market, this intermediate niche also no longer seemed interesting for AMD. The last HEDT thread rippers were introduced in 2019 with the 3000 generation. After that, there were only workstation thread ripper processors of the Pro series (5000) with 8 memory channels and above.

Those who can actually load their CPU cores with computing tasks usually also need such a fast memory connection. However, the focus of computing power has shifted to the graphics card (GPU) in video editing, which is why the CPU is only rarely utilized. 4 memory channels and 3 GPUs are usually more than enough here, even for professional users.

And that&s exactly why HEDT models of the upcoming Threadripper will be available again from November 21, which will also be significantly cheaper than the also newly released workstation models.

AMD&s Ryzen Threadripper 7000 is also available as HEDT midrange again

What the new 7000 series (Pro and not Pro) have in common is that they now support DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. All new models are based on the current Zen 4 cores; there are no frugal and thus effective Zen4c in Threadripper. The brute computing power is obviously in the foreground here.

HEDT Threadripper will be available with a maximum of 64 CPU cores (on 8CCDs), the Pro version gets 12 CCDs for up to 96 cores.

The new HEDT mainboards of the TRX50 platform can use 48 PCIe 5.0 lanes, the memory interface has four DDR-5 channels as mentioned.
Per boards of the WRX90 platform can utilize 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes and 8 DDR-5 RAM channels.
Interestingly, both platforms have the same socket (STR5), which has 4,844 pins. Thus, Pro CPUs can also be used on a HEDT platform - but not vice versa.

AMD has not yet named prices for its Pro models. However, the HEDT models, which are interesting for video editors, are not exactly cheap either:

Ryzen Threadripper 7980X: 64 core/ 128 threads: 4,999 US Dollar
Ryzen Threadripper 7970X: 32 core/ 64 threads: 2,499 US Dollar
Ryzen Threadripper 7960X: 24 Core / 48 Threads: 1.499 US Dollar

Independent tests and sales are scheduled to start on November 21.
