Arri describes the new member of its ECS family as a "modern take on a classic zoom control." OK. Arri is known for understatement rather than exaggeration - because the newly introduced ZMU-4 unit is clearly more than "just" a zoom control. And, moreover, it is not only suitable for ARRI cameras. But first things first... ![]()
The rugged, weatherproof and ergonomically designed ZMU-4 can be switched between wired and wireless configurations virtually on the fly. For wireless operation, Arri&s Hi-5 unit interchangeable radio modules can be used. These include the Hi-5&s RF-EMIP, RF-2400 and RF-900 radio modules (coming soon), with different frequencies for different areas and shooting situations. ![]() The radio modules fit into a recessed slot in the ZMU-4 and form a weatherproof unit (as long as you don&t hold the ZMU-4 upside down - the battery slot has no cover). Thus, no external radio boxes and no additional cables or settings are needed. The classic wired operation is done either via LBUS or a 7Pin CAM Connector. With the latter, the ZMU-4 unit can also be used as a remote controller (Rec Start/Stop, User Buttons, F/I/Z Control) for Sony Venice, RED and Canon cameras. ![]() For zoom control, a force-sensitive joystick is available, which, according to Arri, allows particularly precise zoom control. But the ZMU-4 unit can also be expanded. For example, the OCU-1 override controller can be coupled with the ZMU-4 for a compact 2-axis handheld unit. Like the Hi-5, the ZMU-4 is compatible with Sony&s standard NP-F550/570 batteries. However, it has been designed and optimized to use Arri&s proprietary LBP-3500 batteries, which Arri claims provide a more consistent power supply and a long operating time of at least 15 hours with the RF-EMIP radio module. ![]() The Arri batteries also allow the ZMU-4 to display remaining power as a percentage, allowing for more efficient battery management than is possible with other zoom controllers. Two new adapters, the RA-7 and RA-8, are available for mounting the ZMU-4 unit. These allow the ZMU-4 to be used with a variety of accessories equipped with Arri rosette mounting points. The RA-7 allows the ZMU-4 to be attached to the rosette mount of any camera, handgrip, tripod head or bridge plate. With the RA-8, the ZMU-4 and the Operator Control Unit OCU-1 can be combined to form a compact multi-function unit that can be monitor or handheld. §PIC5 Here also the corresponding ARRI Tech-Talk Video about the ZMU-4 Unit: Bild zur Newsmeldung:
