Viele Filmliebhaber setzen noch immer auf Filmsammlungen in physikalischer Form, also auf DVDs und Blu-ray Discs, um ihre Sammlung in bester Qualität und immer zugriffsbereit zu haben. DVDs nicht mehr lesbarEigentlich halten DVDs sehr lange und sollten laut  zwischen 30 und 100 Jahre lesbar sein. Jetzt aber müssen Filmliebhaber um ihre Sammlungen fürchten: Chris Bumbray, Chefredakteur der Filmnews- und -kritik-Website JoBlo, hatte kürzlich festgestellt, dass einige seiner DVDs nicht mehr abspielbar sind. Nach einiger Recherche wurde klar, dass auch andere dasselbe Problem hatten. Es zeigte sich ein Muster: Betroffen waren nahezu alle DVDs des grossen Filmstudios Warner Brothers, die zwischen 2006 und 2008 produziert wurden. Filmklassiker in GefahrGerade Warner Brothers hat für Filmliebhaber einen besonderen Stellenwert, da das Repertoire dieses grossen Studios viele Filmklassiker aus dem goldenen Zeitalter der klassischen Hollywood-Periode umfasst. Deshalb sind von dem Problem ganze Klassikersammlungen von Regiegrössen wie Stanley Kubrick, John Ford und Alfred Hitchcock und Filmstars wie Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, Errol Flynn und John Wayne betroffen. ;) DVD rot Zu den gefährdeten DVDs zählen aber auch modernere Film-Hits wie Lethal Weapon, Blade Runner oder Erfolgsserien wie The Sopranos, Babylon 5, Veronica Mars und The West Wing. Hier eine unvollständige, vom YouTuber und Filmnerd Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader zusammengestellte Liste betroffener Titel, darunter 105 Boxsets und etwa 202 einzelne Filmtitel. Warner Brothers selbst hat leider noch keine offizielle Liste herausgegeben. Er hatte schon vor drei Jahren auf das Problem hingewiesen, das jetzt endlich dank Chris Bumbray grössere Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Kaputte DVDs im AugenscheinDas Problem macht sich beim Abspielen der DVD bemerkbar: Entweder ist sie überhaupt nicht lesbar oder die Wiedergabe setzt nach einer gewissen Zeitspanne einfach aus. Oder das Menü geht, aber der Film lässt sich nicht abspielen. Manchmal - aber nicht immer - ist das Problem auch äusserlich sichtbar und die DVD ist am Rand bronzen oder anderweitig verfärbt. Leider gibt es keine Möglichkeit, diese DVDs wieder zu reparieren. Unter Fachleuten wird das Problem als Disc rot bezeichnet, also als DVD-Fäule - analog zum Verrotten von Lebensmitteln. Es wird vermutet, dass alle fehlerhaften DVDs aus einer bestimmten Produktionsstätte von Warner Brothers in Pennsylvania stammen, welche minderwertige Materialien zur Herstellung der DVDs genutzt hat. Das allgemeine Phänomen ist aber auch von Laserdiscs und CDs bekannt.  Warner Brothers StatementWarner Brothers hat inzwischen das Problem auch offiziell eingestanden und bestätigt, dass es Probleme mit DVDs gibt, welche zwischen 2006 und 2008 herausgekommen sind, und bietet einen Austausch durch neue an oder - wenn nicht möglich, weil nicht mehr in Produktion - mit einem vergleichbaren Titel, leider aber in diesem Fall keinen Refund. Für Filmliebhaber ist letzteres natürlich ein Problem, denn manche Filme gibt es aufgrund eines Wechsels der Lizenzgeber nicht mehr digital als DVD in einer Neuauflage und sie sind so verloren. Was tun? DVDs sichern!Man sollte also seine DVD-Sammlung danach durchsehen, ob man einen der betroffenen Titel bzw. eine DVD von Warner Brothers aus der genannten Zeit hat, und diese prüfen, sonst könnte man später eine böse Überraschung erleben. Glücklich ist, wer vorgesorgt hat und zum Beispiel - wie manche Filmnerds - seine eigene Sammlung gerippt und so Sicherheitskopien aller Filme auf Festplatte gesichert hat. Bei aktuellen Preisen von rund 18 Euro pro TB und 26 TB grossen Festplatten kann man so zusätzliche Sicherheit für seine Filmlieblinge relativ billig erreichen - passen doch beispielsweise die Daten rund 2.100 doppelseitiger DVDs auf eine einzige 18 TB Festplatte zum Preis von rund 350 Euro. It is suspected that all defective DVDs come from a specific Warner Brothers production facility in Pennsylvania, which used inferior materials to manufacture the DVDs. The general phenomenon is also known from laserdiscs and CDs. Warner Brothers StatementWarner Brothers has now officially acknowledged the problem and confirmed that there are problems with DVDs that came out between 2006 and 2008, and offers an exchange for new ones or - if not possible because they are no longer in production - with a comparable title, but unfortunately no refund in this case. For film enthusiasts, the latter is of course a problem, because some films are no longer available digitally as a DVD in a new edition due to a change of licensors and are thus lost. What to do? Secure DVDs!You should therefore check your DVD collection to see if you have one of the affected titles or a DVD from Warner Brothers from the period mentioned, and check it, otherwise you could experience an unpleasant surprise later. Happy is the one who has taken precautions and, for example - like some film nerds - has ripped his own collection and thus secured backup copies of all films on the hard drive.
