The Panasonic LUMIX S 85mm F1.8 (S-S85) is the forerunner of a rapidly growing series of full format primes for the L-mount. It is the first of four announced lenses with F1.8 open aperture (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm).
All four F1.8 lenses will have a common size and position of the controls, as typically known from cine lenses. Thus, changing lenses (e.g.) on a gimbal does not force a new adjustment of the whole camera. Thanks to the same lens diameter, filters can also be used together.
Due to its compact length (approx. 8.2 cm) and low weight (approx. 355g), the lens is much more handy than previous L-Mount lenses from Panasonic. All models also feature a dust and splash-proof design that can be used in adverse conditions down to -10° C.
The filter diameter is 67 mm and its 9-blade round aperture is designed to provide an attractive bokeh effect with smooth sharpness to blur transitions and round imaging of point light sources with low vignetting.
Last but not least, Panasonic also emphasizes the particularly fast autofocus with 240 fps or Hz. and the minimized Focus Breathing.
From the end of November, the first LUMIX S 85mm F1.8 will be available for 649 euros (Austria, 20 percent VAT) and 632 euros (Germany, 13 percent VAT). Panasonic has not yet announced when the other models in the series will follow. But in any case "soon".
