As of today, after approximately a decade, Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 10. The operating system, which was introduced in 2015 as a free update for Windows 7 and 8, will therefore no longer receive regular security updates. ![]() End of Support for Windows 10 - Microsoft Grants Another Grace Period.
Without the monthly security patches, continued use of Windows 10 online will become increasingly risky. For European users, however, Microsoft has at the last minute arranged another free grace period. The Extended Security Update (ESU) program, which was initially a paid program only for organizations, will now, after all, provide additional security updates for at least another year. However, participation in the ESU program now strictly requires a Microsoft account – which is, at least, also available for free. As an obvious alternative, Microsoft recommends a mostly free upgrade to Windows 11. This new operating system, however, has higher hardware requirements, which exclude many older computers from an update. The PC industry didn&t necessarily find this approach problematic, as many manufacturers anticipate increased sales due to forced hardware replacements. However, the forced update also seems to be showing unintended side effects. For instance, some users are toying with the idea of trying out a Mac when they purchase new hardware. And those who, on the other hand, want to continue using their old, still perfectly functional hardware, might now find an increasingly practical alternative in Linux distributions. Most Windows users among slashCAM readers, however, have likely already transitioned to Windows 11 some time ago – as video editing inherently demands rather high and thus automatically quite up-to-date hardware. And those who are still using Windows 10 today now have another year to consider further upgrade steps. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Support-Ende für Windows 10: Microsoft gewährt weitere Gnadenfrist. |
