After Effects Clone without installation - online motion design and video editor

As we all know, everything that can be realistically imagined will eventually be realised. But even we didn&t expect a single motivated developer to programme a simple After Effects clone that works in the browser without installation.

But that is exactly what Pikimov has now become. The website advertises the free online motion design and video editor as an alternative to Adobe After Effects, whereby the interface is actually very similar, but the range of functions is (still) significantly smaller. Nevertheless, a lot of things already work - such as importing images, videos, audio clips and 3D models. The selection of effects is still rather small, but there are already keyframes - which means that the system is already practical to work with.

As the app is web-based, no installation is actually necessary. In principle, the programme runs in any browser under Windows, macOS and Linux. In contrast to cloud solutions, the files used remain on your own computer and do not have to be uploaded to a server.

However, Pikimov requires some Web API functions that are currently only available in Chrome, Edge and maybe Opera and maybe, maybe in Brave. This is why Pikimov does not currently work with Firefox or Safari (as of v127). Pikimov also generally does not work on tablets, or only to a limited extent with tricks.

The file size of just 5 MB (!!), which the browser has to load as a file to start, seems pretty incredible - from then on the programme even theoretically runs offline. Another nice thing is the author&s statement that Pikimov should remain free to use forever, even if it is explicitly not open source.

And the programme is set to grow even further: 3D compositions (incl. 3D cameras), support for 4K resolution, extended light management, animated 3D models, a GLSL shader editor and the integration of Gaussian splattings will be available "soon".

However, the current beta version is still limited to a maximum project duration of 6 minutes and a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 @ 30 fps. But everyone can try it out for themselves with a simple click on the website...
