Alienware has announced the second generation of its Area 51m 17" high-end notebook. From the outside, it looks very similar to its predecessor model, but its main components have been completely updated: the Alienware Area 51m R2 now uses (in its better equipment versions) an Intel Comet Lake S 10th generation desktop CPU, a new Nvidia graphics card or optionally an AMD navigation GPU, faster RAM and also a better display.

Maximum configurable are 2TB NVMe-SSDs each, which can also be interconnected as RAID0. For the 17.3" display a 144Hz and a 300Hz FullHD or a 500 nits bright 4K panel is used. Its interface selection includes three USB-A ports (3.2 Gen1), one Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0b and a mini display port 1.4 as well as an RJ45 Ethernet port and an SD card reader. The Alienware Area 51m R2 should be on the market starting on June 23rd at prices starting at 3,050 dollars. However, a disappointment has to be booked: originally, Dell&s promised possibility of making the individual hardware components exchangeable in the Area 51m in opposition to the normally soldered parts of other laptops was a big argument for the predecessor model. The 51m should thus combine the best of both worlds, desktop and laptop: portability and upgradeability. Dell even introduced the proprietary DGFF format for GPUs. ![]() Alienware Area 51m R2 But now with the new model it becomes apparent that owners of the predecessor cannot upgrade to the latest GPUs like the RTX 2070/2080 Super or the latest Intel CPUs of the 10th generation for reasons of hardware compatibility - the original promise of expandability has unfortunately not been kept. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Alienware Area 51m R2 mobile Workstation mit neuen Intel CPUs und Nvidia Super GPUs |
