Amazon gets MGM, including numerous film and series rights

[16:28 Fri,18.March 2022   by Rudi Schmidts]

Amazon is allowed to take over the almost hundred-year-old Hollywood film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) - after the EU antitrust watchdogs did not veto the deal. This gives Amazon access to more than 4,000 film titles and around 17,000 series episodes for its streaming service.

This means that in the future you will not only find all James Bond films on Prime Video, but also numerous other classics - here is a small, non-representative excerpt of famous MGM works from the last century:

1925: Ben Hur (Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ)
1931: Mata Hari (Mata Hari)

1935: Mutiny on the Bounty (Mutiny on the Bounty)
1939: The Wizard of Oz (The Wizard of Oz)
1950: The Asphalt Jungle (The Asphalt Jungle)
1951: An American in Paris (An American in Paris)
1952: You Shall Be My Lucky Star (Singin& in the Rain)
1956: Alarm in Space (Forbidden Planet)
1957: Jailhouse Rock - Rhythm Behind Bars (Jailhouse Rock)
1959: The Invisible Third (North by Northwest)
1959: Ben Hur
1960: The Time Machine (The Time Machine)
1962: Mutiny on the Bounty (Mutiny on the Bounty)
1965: Doctor Zhivago (Doctor Zhivago)
1967: The Dirty Dozen (The Dirty Dozen)
1968: 2001: A Space Odyssey (2001: A Space Odyssey)
1971: Shaft
1973: Westworld
1980: Fame - The road to fame (Fame)
1981: Clash of the Titans (Clash of the Titans)
1986: Platoon
1987: Moonstruck (Moonstruck)
1987: RoboCop
1988: A Fish Called Wanda (A Fish Called Wanda)
1991: Thelma & Louise
1995: Get Shorty (Get Shorty)

MGM (whose roaring lion trademark in movie credits may now be considered iconic) was founded in 1924 and got off to a good start as a Hollywood studio until the 1970s, with several global successes. Since then, however, MGM has not always been run by successful hands, especially as the movie business became increasingly risky financially due to its blockbuster hunger. After numerous changes of ownership, MGM even had to file for bankruptcy in 2010 and was subsequently restructured.

Nevertheless, the company remained worth a lot due to its extensive film rights: Amazon is now letting this acquisition cost no less than 8.45 billion dollars. Leaving aside the 17,000 series, this amounts to an average of 2 million per film. Compared to typical blockbuster costs in the triple-digit millions, this is a bargain and probably a good deal in the long run. As long as there are a few Marx Brothers films in the package, nothing should go wrong ;)

Thanks to Ruessel for the hint in the forum.
