Apple has just unveiled the first hardware from Cupertino – the iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro 14" – that utilizes the completely new M5 chip, which is said to feature primarily a 4x higher GPU performance compared to its M4 predecessor. ;)
The significant performance increase of the graphics unit is attributed to a new 10-core GPU, which for the first time features a "Neural Accelerator" – an AI accelerator – built into every GPU core. In total, the new M5 chip therefore features a 10-core CPU with 4 Performance Cores and 6 Efficiency Cores, as well as a 10-core GPU with the aforementioned "Neural Accelerators" and the 16-core Neural Engine known from its predecessors. ;) The memory bandwidth of the new M5 is 153 GB/s, which is higher than its predecessor. According to Apple, the new M5 performs significantly faster than the previous M4 for AI- and graphics-intensive tasks. Apple claims up to 3.5 times better AI performance than its predecessor, which represents a rather remarkable leap for a single chip generation. We are very much looking forward to the first tests... In addition to the AI performance gain, the new M5 chip is expected to deliver exceptionally long battery life, which Apple rates at up to 24 hours (matching the best previous long-runner, the MacBook Pro 16" with M4 Pro chip). According to Apple, the 14" MacBook Pro with M5, utilizing the latest storage technology, delivers faster SSD performance than the previous generation for tasks such as importing RAW image files or exporting large videos. ;) Furthermore, it includes other, partly established features – such as the Liquid Retina XDR Display with an option for nano-texture glass, a 12MP Center Stage camera, a 6-speaker system, a variety of ports, as well as Apple Intelligence capabilities and the new possibilities of macOS Tahoe. The ports match the layout of the 14" predecessors, featuring three Thunderbolt ports, 1x MagSafe, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an SDXC card slot, and an HDMI interface. However, it should be noted that the Thunderbolt ports are implemented as Thunderbolt 4, not Thunderbolt 5 as on the predecessor. The new 14" MacBook Pro with M5 is available in Space Black and Silver and can be pre-ordered starting today.
