Apple Mac Pro: New graphics card modules with up to 4 AMD Radeon Pro W6800X GPUs with 128 GB VRAM

Apple has unveiled three new high-end graphics card modules for its latest Mac Pro workstations that give professional users with enough money on the high side of graphics card-intensive applications like Cinema 4D, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or Octane X a hefty GPU power upgrade. They can either replace old GPUs as an upgrade in existing systems, or be configured as an option in new Mac Pros.

Equipped with graphics cards from AMD&s powerful Radeon Pro W6000 series in the form of the Radeon Pro W6800X, Radeon Pro W6800X and Radeon Pro W6900X, the three new MPX modules each bring four additional Thunderbolt 3 ports and an HDMI 2.0 port.

According to Apple, the performance of a new AMD Radeon Pro W6800X Duo GPU versus an AMD Dual FirePro D700 one in Blackmagic&s DaVinci Resolve is up to 6.9x faster, versus a Radeon Pro Vega 64X (iMac) 1.3x.

Apple&s Mac Pro expansion module system MPX (the Mac Pro has two MPX slots, with a maximum of 1,000W for GPUs) makes it relatively easy to wirelessly integrate or swap graphics cards, including multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports, into Mac Pros. The modules are connected via Apple&s Infinity Fabric Link, which allows four GPUs to be connected to the system via two Duo W6800X modules at 84GB per second per link in each direction (168GB per second bidirectionally) - five times faster than via PCIe.

Pricing and availability of the new modules

The three new modules can be purchased individually as standalone versions or configured as an option in new Mac Pros, in the latter case the price is slightly lower. For example, the

Radeon Pro W6800X MPX module with 32 GB VRAM costs 3,220 euros individually or 2,760 euros in a new Mac Pro, and 5,290 euros as a version with 64 GB VRAM.

The

Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX module with 2 x 32 GB VRAM costs 5,750 euro individually or 5,980 euro in a Mac Pro. Additionally, there is a version with 2 x 64 GB VRAM for 11,040 euro.

For the model

Radeon Pro W6900X MPX with 32 GB VRAM, Apple wants 6,900 euro for the standalone version or 6,440 euro (in a new Mac Pro) - it gets a bit more expensive with two configured, these cost 13,340 euro.

The previously available AMD Radeon Pro Vega II MPX and AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo MPX modules are no longer available as configurable options, but can still be purchased as a standalone kit.

Apple&s Mac Pros can be configured with Intel Xeon CPUs with 8 to 28 cores, up to 8 TB of NVMe SSD storage, up to two (dual) MPX modules with a maximum of four W6800X GPUs in total, and up to 1.5 TB GB of RAM - at a price of around 60,000 Euros in the maximum configuration.

According to the latest rumors, Apple will launch a new Mac Pro with a next-generation Intel Xeon Ice Lake-W processor with up to 38 cores (and theoretically up to 4 TB RAM) next year.
