In the future, Apple&s computers like the MacBook, iMac or Mac Pro will use the same ARM-based CPUs developed by Apple as the iPhone and iPad. The new Apple CPU should offer more processing power with less power consumption than the previous Intel CPUs. However, new Intel Macs will continue to be developed in parallel.
Apple A13 System-on-a-Chip
Within the next two years, the changeover should be completed and all Intel Macs will be offered with the new CPU, christened Apple Silicon. Although no new Mac has yet been introduced that uses this CPU, the first models are expected to appear in the course of this year. The new Apple Silicon SoC (System-on-a-Chip) has a CPU as well as an integrated graphics unit, neural engine, crypto unit and power management.
However, the previous software has to be ported to the new system - Apple itself has already done this for all its apps and, in a demo of a first Mac equipped with an Apple A12Z Bionic, demonstrated video editing with Final Cut Pro, which was capable of playing back three 4K video streams simultaneously. Also already ported are Adobe&s Photoshop, Lightroom and Microsoft&s Office.
Final Cut Pro on the new Apple Silicon
Developers of programs for macOS can use Universal 2 to create binaries for both Intel and ARM systems without additional effort. In addition, the new MacOS Big Sur will enable programs written for Intel to run on ARM CPUs using the integrated Rosetta 2 "translation" software.
Functionality of the Apple Silicon SoC
The use of own processors has several advantages for Apple: in the future Apple will no longer be dependent on another manufacturer and its timetable and can set its own priorities in chip development. In addition, the new Apple ARM SoC is expected to have higher energy efficiency and be more powerful than Intel&s CPUs. In addition, Apple naturally attracts a higher profit margin through in-house production. An additional advantage: since all of Apple&s platforms now use the same system, iOS apps on the iPhone and iPad can be run on Macs in the future without any problems. Moreover, with its nine SoCs, Apple will be the first computer manufacturer whose hardware supports neural networks by default.
The changeover should be completed within 2 years. Apple will also release new macOS versions for the Intel Macs in the future and support them.
