Apple has introduced the new iPhone 14 and iPhone Pro - the new features of the four new models (iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus as well as iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max) include automatic accident detection, emergency call SOS via satellite and for the first time a Always-on display and improvements to the camera systems such as a 48 megapixel main camera and a special function for better image quality in low light conditions.
Apple is sharply increasing the euro prices compared to the previous year: the iPhone 14 in the basic version in the USA costs 800 US dollars, just as much as the iPhone 13 in Germany last year, but the price has increased from 900 euros to 1,000 euros now - like this Apple is reacting to inflation and the looming economic crisis to save its margins.

That&s one of the reasons why Apple decided to differentiate the Standard and Pro variants even more and gave the Pro variant significantly more functions that go far beyond the previous distinction with a better camera and larger display.
New features of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro
Both product lines have new emergency functions such as automatic accident detection and an emergency call via satellite that is independent of the mobile network. Thanks to improved acceleration sensors, different types of car accidents are recognized and an emergency call including location information is automatically sent if the user does not react.
What is new is the possibility of sending such an (automatic or manual) emergency call via satellite without a connection to the mobile network. However, this satellite emergency call is initially only available in the USA and is only free for 2 years.

The new old heart: A15 and A16 SoC
The very heart of the iPhone, the SoC, experiences the smallest improvement. The iPhone 14 only uses the SoC of the previous year&s Pro model (the A15 bionic chip with six CPU and five GPU cores) and the iPhone Pro uses the new A16, but this differs only minimally from the A15, which also only has one slightly revised A14 was. In practice, however, this difference will hardly matter, since both versions are absolutely sufficient for the majority of tasks, both have the same number of performance, efficiency and GPU cores (2P, 4E and 5 GPU) and the difference in computing power of 15, 8 TOPS to 17 TOPS is very small.
Features iPhone 14
Apple has focused the main focus of the improvements on the dual camera system, so the front selfie camera now has an autofocus for the first time and the 26mm wide-angle main camera has a larger sensor (XX) and a faster f/1.5 lens, which together result in significantly improved low-light performance should.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
The iPhone 14 has a 6.1" OLED display with a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels, the Plus model has a larger 6.7" screen 6.1" with 2,778 x 1,284 pixels - both with a maximum brightness of 800 nits in normal (SDR) operation or up to 1,200 nits in HDR playback.
The iPhone and iPhone 14 Plus are both said to benefit from longer battery life, which is close to the iPhone 13 Pro. The video playback for the iPhone 14 should be 23 (offline) or 20 hours (streaming) or 26 and 20 hours for the iPhone 14 Pro.

Features iPhone 14 Pro: camera, display and more
Of course, the iPhone 14 Pro model is particularly interesting for filmmakers, which - traditionally for the Pro product line - has a better camera system than the standard model with more and larger sensors.
This year, Apple is dedicating a special innovation to the low-light area in the Pro model, as this is where the largest, most visible improvements are possible compared to previous generations. The new photonic engine is said to produce significantly better images in medium to poor light conditions by means of computer-aided integration of hardware and software. Up to 2x for the main camera, up to 3x for the ultra wide-angle camera, up to 2x for the telephoto lens and up to 2x for the true depth camera.

Apple&s 3-camera system also relies on a new main camera that uses a quad-pixel sensor with a resolution of 48 megapixels. This should not only enable photos in full resolution in Apple&s ProRAW format, but also better low-light photos in a special mode by combining 4 pixels into one pixel in order to obtain a 12 megapixel photo with four times the light intensity in dark shooting situations. The new 48-megapixel sensor also enables 2x non-digital zoom for 4K video recording. In addition, the Cinematic Mode now also allows recording with 4K at 30 fps and 4K at 24 fps.
A new 12 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera with 1.4 µm pixels is said to deliver a sharper image with more detail and also enable better macro photos, and the improved telephoto lens now offers a 3x optical zoom.

Action mode for video recording
The action mode is new, which was specially developed for video recordings in motion and is intended to make the use of an additional gimbal or a special action cam with image stabilization (such as a GoPro Hero) unnecessary. It uses the entire 48-megapixel sensor surface for digital stabilization via intelligent cropping to correct wobbles and shocks and make movements look smooth - this is also supported when filming in Dolby Vision HDR.
Notch becomes Dynamic Island
Another innovation concerns the unpopular annoying notch in the Super Retina XDR display, behind which the TrueDepth and selfie cameras are hidden - on the iPhone 14 Pro this area is now dynamic and becomes practically usable. Apple now calls the notch a "Dynamic Island" and, depending on the app, uses the area for context-specific notifications or interaction options or as an overlay menu, for example to control the currently active music player or to display active navigation or a call even when other apps are actually active .
By temporarily enlarging the dark area of the notch, including overlays on this additional area, this otherwise "dead" spot on the display should disappear for the user. In contrast to other manufacturers who offer smartphones with a full display area without a notch or hole, Apple does not seem to be able or willing to do without the notch. Analysts predict a completely notch-free display for 2024 or even 2026.
Another innovation, which is already known from the Apple Watch, like the automatic emergency call, concerns the screen, which for the first time in the Pro models can function as an always-on display if desired, which now always shows the lock screen together with all its information - when not in use dimmed down to save energy and with a refresh rate of only 1 frame per second.
*The advanced display also has the same HDR peak brightness as Pro Display XDR and the highest outdoor peak brightness of any smartphone: up to 2000 nits, twice as bright as iPhone 13 Pro.

Prices and availability
However, Apple still offers both basic models in sub-variants with displays of different sizes: the iPhone 14, which costs from 999 euros, comes with a 6.1" screen, while the iPhone 14 Plus variant, which is 150 euros more expensive, has a 6.7" display, which is available in the last generation was still reserved for the Pro Max model. The iPhone 14 Pro, which also has a 6.1" display, starts at 1,299 euros - if you want a larger display, you will find it in the iPhone 14 Pro Max (from 1,499 euros), which, like the iPhone Plus, has a 6.7" screen.
The prices given apply to the variant with the smallest memory (128 GB) - the models with 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB (iPhone 14 Pro) are correspondingly more expensive - the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 1 TB comes to 2,099 euros . There is no new iPhone Mini model, but Apple is offering last year&s iPhone 13 Mini. All models can be pre-ordered from Friday 9th September and will be available from Friday 16th September. more infos at bei www.apple.com
