Apple unveils iMacs and MacBook Pros with first-ever 3nm M3 CPUs

[09:47 Tue,31.October 2023   by Rob]

Tonight was the night: Apple introduced its new M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, the industry&s first 3 nm CPUs for desktop computers. The new Apple silicon is installed for the first time in the new iMac 24" as well as in the new 14" and 16" MacBook Pros. Apple&s M3 CPU development seems to have focused primarily on the integrated GPU architecture, which according to Apple has made the biggest leap since the introduction of the M-chips - and thus also with quite interesting performance increases for the moving image sector:

Among other things, the new M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips have an improved neural engine to accelerate high-performance machine learning (ML) models. According to Apple, the neural engine is up to 60 per cent faster than in the M1 chip family. This should speed up AI/ML workflows while keeping data on the device to protect privacy. AI image processing tools such as Noise Reduction and Super Resolution in Topaz should become even faster. Scene Edit Detection in Adobe Premiere and Smart Conform in Final Cut Pro are also expected to get more performance.

According to Apple, all three chips of the M3 family have a further improved media engine with hardware acceleration on board, which is important for video codecs such as H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW. And for the first time, Apple says the Media Engine also supports AV1 decoding to enable more energy-efficient playback from streaming services, further extending battery life.

The new M3 Max CPU represents Apple&s new flagship CPU, now with up to 92 billion transistors. The 40-core GPU is said to be up to 50 per cent faster than the M1 Max and supports up to 128GB of shared memory. The 16-core CPU comes with 12 performance cores and four efficiency cores. According to Apple, this provides up to 80 per cent faster performance than the M1 Max. As with the M2 chip, two ProRes engines work together in the M3 Max for hardware-based ProRes and ProRes RAW acceleration, which can then also be accessed under DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, etc.

Apple&s new M3 chip also works in the new iMac 24" - here there is a choice of two performance variants: Either with 8 core GPU or with 10 core GPU. Furthermore, there is a choice of many colour variants. The 8 Core variant is available in green, rosé, blue and silver - the 10 Core GPU variant in the colours green, yellow, orange, rosé, violet, blue and silver.

The 8 Core variant comes with 8 GB shared memory, 256 GB SSD, two Thunderbolt ports, Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse. The 10 Core GPU variant comes with 8 GB shared memory, 256 GB SSD, two Thunderbolt ports, two additional USB 3 ports, Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse and Ethernet.

The display in the new iMac 24" is a 24" 4.5K Retina display with 11.3 million pixels, P3 colour space, over one billion colours and 500 nits brightness.

14“ und 16“ MacBook Pro

Apple&s new MacBook Pro portfolio offers the largest selection of M3 chips. Here, the new M3 chip can be found in the MacBook Pro 14" as well as M3 Pro and M3 Pro Max in both the 14" and 16" MacBook Pro.

All MacBook Pro models feature a Liquid Retina XDR display with 20 per cent brighter SDR content, an integrated 1080p camera, a 6-speaker immersive system and a host of connectivity options, according to Apple. With up to 22 hours of battery life, the lineup again offers impressive battery life, according to Apple. It delivers the same performance whether it is plugged in or running on battery power - a great thing for mobile use.

With the M3 CPU, so-called dynamic caching also makes its way into the MacBook Pro models. This allocates the use of local memory to the hardware in real time, so that only the amount of memory needed for each task is used. This is said to greatly increase GPU utilisation and performance for the most demanding pro apps (and games), according to Apple.

The GPU also brings new rendering capabilities to the Apple chip such as hardware accelerated mesh shading for more features and efficiency in processing shapes for more visually complex scenes. It also brings hardware accelerated ray tracing to MacBooks for the first time, allowing games to render more accurate shadows and reflections and create more realistic environments.

For the MacBook Pro with M3 chip, Apple claims performance in Final Cut Pro rendering is up to 7.4 times faster than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Core i7.3 and up to 60 per cent faster than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.
For the MacBook Pro with M3 Max CPU, Apple claims noise reduction performance in Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Studio is up to 2.7 times faster than the fastest MacBook Pro with Intel processor,5 and up to 65 percent faster than the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max.

We are trying to publish our own performance tests on the new M3 platform as soon as possible - more on this soon on slashCAM ...
