Almost completely unnoticed until now, Atomos already announced a small sensation on 6 October
(...) The company is exploring ways to market its unique intellectual property and is in talks with several camera manufacturers." Hmm. Of course, this raises more a few questions than answers: How can Atomos suddenly come out of nowhere to be so at the forefront of sensor development that established camera manufacturers (who, after all, have generally been developing sensors themselves for decades) are interested? And who could these camera manufacturers be? Is this about scenic large format sensors or rather broadcast/streaming cameras? ![]() Some answers might be found in an acquisition of Atomos five years ago. At that time, they acquired the intellectual property rights and the technical team of the broadcast equipment manufacturer Grass Valley in order to develop a state-of-the-art 8K video sensor. This purchase now seems to be bearing fruit. And of course the whole thing smells more like broadcast than cine, especially as Atomos has also broadened its reach into this market segment with its new cloud streaming ambitions over the past two years. What we also think is conceivable, however, is that Atomos wants to market its codec IP in connection with this sensor. Atomos has ready-made IP blocks for encoding (e.g. ProRes and ProRes RAW) that it could offer camera manufacturers when using the sensor. But as the Bavarian says, "Nix Gwiss woass ma ned", here we have to wait and see what happens in the next few months. But the news is certainly exciting... ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Überraschung von Atomos: Eigener 8K-Videosensor steht vor der Vermarktung |
