Chinese storage specialist BIWIN has introduced a new memory card format that combines the compact size of microSDs with the high speed of NVMe SSDs. The new memory card, dubbed "Mini SSD," in the 1517 form factor measures just 15 x 17 x 1.4 mm, about the size of a SIM or microSD card, but unlike the latter, it boasts sequential transfer rates of up to 3,700 MB/s for reading and 3,400 MB/s for writing – many times faster than microSDs. ![]() BIWIN Mini SSD
The BIWIN Mini SSD is produced in sizes of 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB and integrates controller and flash memory into a single chip module in LGA design. This allows the module to achieve its extremely compact size. Under the hood, it uses 3D-TLC-NAND memory, connected via PCIe Gen4 x2 and the NVMe 1.4 protocol. This combination enables high transfer rates in a small space. The Mini SSD supports modern SSD features such as dynamic SLC caching, wear leveling, TRIM, and garbage collection to maintain long-term performance. Since the Mini SSD is exposed to environmental influences as a removable storage medium, it is robustly manufactured and meets the IP68 protection class against the ingress of water and dust. It is also designed to survive drops from up to 3 meters without damage. Active cooling is not provided due to the small dimensions; instead, a temperature sensor monitors the operating temperature to prevent overheating during operation. Currently, the Mini SSD is not yet widely available in stores. The first customers for the tiny storage device are device manufacturers: The Chinese gaming handheld GPD Win Max 5 (market launch expected in October 2025) and One-Netbook&s OneXPlayer Super X are expected to be the first products to feature a corresponding Mini SSD slot, which functions similarly to a SIM slot, as the Mini SSD also sits in a card sled. The Mini SSD will become truly interesting if it becomes an official standard – the designation as 1517 is an indication that BIWIN might intend to do so. And even then, it will take some time before well-known manufacturers integrate the new memory card format into their devices. ![]() BIWIN Mini SSD Due to its compact format, the new memory cards would be particularly suitable for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. The high speed and storage capacity would also make them ideal for use in cameras for recording high-resolution videos (however, the cards would then need to be easier to replace). Decisive for the distribution would of course also be the - still unknown - price per GB. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: BIWIN Mini SSD - Winziges Speichermodul in MicroSD-Größe mit NVMe-Tempo |
