The video platform Vimeo – once an indie alternative to YouTube, now a publicly traded B2B company – is being taken over by Bending Spoons. The latter is no unknown player in the tech world; several apps and services have already been bought up by this investor, including FiLMiC Pro. The once-hip camera app now hardly plays a role anymore, after first a (not exactly cheap) www.slashcam.de/news/single/FiLMiC-Pro-nur-noch-im-Abo--mobile-Kamera-App-kost-17456.html subscription model was introduced and a little later the entire www.slashcam.de/news/single/Filmic-Pro---Team-aus-dem-Rennen--Pferd-laeuft-noch-18295.html developer team was dismissed.
Significant price increases with no improved performance have also been observed in other acquired services, so it is to be feared that a similar fate will befall Vimeo. Even if the takeover statement claims that "Bending Spoons confirms its commitment to innovation in the video platform market" - little innovation has been seen so far. Anyone who still has a subscription with Vimeo should probably prepare for rising prices. How the offer will change beyond that remains to be seen. In fact, Vimeo was quite popular for a long time with its ad-free and high-quality video hosting for a moderate monthly price, until Vimeo&s focus shifted more to the more lucrative field of corporate communications. In 2022, for example, Vimeo www.slashcam.de/news/single/Vimeo-fuehrt--quasi--Bandbreiten-Limit-fuer-seine-Ab-17100.html became unpopular with subscribers when unofficial bandwidth limits were introduced. In comparison, YouTube has improved in video quality (initially a flaw), but viewers are bombarded with advertising interruptions - the indirect price for the free hosting. In addition, some ridiculous conspiracy videos are recommended as worth watching by the algorithm. Takeover costs 1.38 billion dollars The takeover will require a purchase price of approximately US1.38 billion in cash. Under the terms of the agreement, Vimeo shareholders will receive US.85 in cash for each Vimeo share they own. The transaction, which has been unanimously approved by Vimeo&s board of directors, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions and approvals, including approval by Vimeo&s shareholders and required regulatory approvals. Upon completion of the transaction, Vimeo will become a privately held company and its equity capital will no longer be listed on a public stock exchange. Bild zur Newsmeldung:
