Beware of LED lights with internal battery

[10:38 Sun,24.March 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Are powerful LED lights with an internal battery dangerous? According to some YouTubers with a focus on photography/film, yes - Chung Dha and MarkusPix warn against COB LED lights with a high wattage if they have an internal battery in combination with an unprotected power switch. This is because if the light is lying next to flammable material during transportation and is accidentally activated by another piece of luggage that has slipped out of place, the light could accidentally come on in the bag and become so hot due to the lack of cooling in the confined space that other objects in the vicinity catch fire. This would of course be particularly dangerous if the light is in a car or airplane.

Chung Dha cites the 60W COB light Smallrig RC 608 with integrated 3400 mAh battery as an example, which is activated by a simple slide switch that is located on the outside of the housing and is not protected by a recess, for example. MarkusPix, on the other hand, warns against Zhiyun&s CX 100 LED COB, the cheaper version of the X100, which has a built-in battery instead of an external one and can be switched on with a simple double-click. It had already happened to him that the 100W light in his transport bag came on. He was lucky and discovered it in time, but assumes that it could have caused a fire - Zhiyun has provided its lights with a warning that they can ignite objects that come too close to them.

B (ChipOnBoard) LED luminaires are particularly vulnerable as they combine several LEDs (typically nine or more) directly on a carrier board and thus combine a great deal of power in a very small space.

What can be done

?

The problem with such lights is that the battery is not removable, so you are completely dependent on the reliability of the power switch during transportation. One workaround could be to set the brightness to 0 during transportation in addition to the power switch. MarkusPix, however, considers the lights to be too dangerous and prefers the version with an external battery after his bad experiences.

We do not dare to make an assessment of how high the risk actually is, but it certainly does no harm to check what safety precautions are in place before buying such a powerful LED light with an internal battery: is the power switch protected by a flap or at least embedded in the housing or can it be locked?

We are not yet aware of any case in which a fire has actually been caused by such a COB LED with an internal rechargeable battery - but the warning should perhaps not be dismissed out of hand. A high-performance light that shines in a very small space without exhaust air can probably reach quite high temperatures - tests would have to show whether they are sufficient to ignite objects. We are looking forward to the first tests and measurements, experiments and field reports.
