Blackmagic ATEM Mini: Compact Live Production Mixer // IBC 2019
[12:42 Wed,18.September 2019 by Thomas Richter]
Blackmagic has introduced a new small and cheap version of its live production mixer ATEM for multi-camera productions. The ATEM Mini allows switching between four live video sources e.g. for live streaming via YouTube via its compact control panel.
All video, audio and control connections such as the four HDMI inputs, two microphone sockets as well as an HDMI output and a USB port, which serves as webcam output, are located on the back of the Blackmagic ATEM Mini. An external recorder or monitor, for example, can be connected via HDMI Out.
The console-like control panel can be used to directly select individual audio and video sources and activate video effects and transitions. Alternatively, the mixing of the channels can be done via the computer via Ethernet using the free ATEM Software Control (Windows/Mac).

The integrated DVE processor can be used to create picture-in-picture effects for live comments, crossfades or effects such as dip-to-color, DVE squeeze and DVE push. Up to 20 separate RGBA graphics such as titles, opening panels and logos can be loaded and displayed from the integrated media pool. For complex effects such as graphical wipe apertures, still images from the video stream can be stored and used in the internal media pool. Chroma or luminance keying, e.g. for the insertion of titles, is possible with the ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyer.
The ATEM Mini can also create still images from the video output and store them in the internal media pool. Saved graphics can be managed via ATEM Software Control or played directly from Photoshop using the ATEM Photoshop plug-in.

Full compatibility with existing streaming software such as Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Skype, Twitch TV, Periscope, Livestream or Wirecast on the connected PC is ensured by the FullHD video output via USB, which makes the resulting stream of the ATEM Mini look like that of an ordinary webcam.
The internal Fairlight audio mixer makes even complex live audio mixes possible. It has a total of 12 channels: eight mixer channels are extracted from the HDMI input, two additional stereo channels come via the 3.5mm microphone connectors. Each input channel has a parametric 6-band equalizer, compressor, limiter, expander, noise gate and full panorama control.
The ATEM Mini will be available from Blackmagic Design Resellers around the world from November 2019 at a price of €345.
