Blackmagic Camera 7.9 update brings new camera GUI and image stabilization via gyro data

Along with the new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2, Blackmagic has also released the - as always free - Camera 7.9 update, which gives the Pocket Cinema Cameras 4K, 6K and 6K Pro interesting new features, such as a new, cleaner user interface and the ability to adjust the strength of focus support via a slider. In addition, lens and autofocus performance has also been improved and accelerated, and the audio level can now be adjusted in dB steps.

In addition, the update adds support for Blackmagic Design Zoom and Focus Demand controllers to all Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K models.Also quite handy is another new feature: in the future, custom presets and LUTs will not be deleted after updating the camera software but will remain in place and usable after the update.

Subsequent stabilization via gyro metadata

A very interesting feature (oddly not mentioned in the release notes, but demonstrated in the following clip by Blackmagic&s CEO Grant Petty) is brought by Camera Update 7.9 for all currently available Pocket Cinema models: so for the first time, the gyro data from the camera&s gyro sensor is stored in the metadata of the recorded clips and can thus be used for subsequent stabilization in DaVinci Resolve 18 using a new AI algorithm. The following clip (starting at 1:41) shows the first examples of this:

The algorithm can use the motion sensor data to distinguish when large changes in the image are caused by a movement of the subject in the frame and when they are caused by a movement of the camera - a great help in calculating a shake-free video. If the subsequent stabilization using the gyro data really works as well as shown in the clip, then this could "fix" one of the biggest shortcomings of the Blackmagic Cinema Cameras: the lack of a moving sensor. However, this stabilization using the gyro metadata will only be possible in a new version of DaVinci Reolve 18, which should be released soon.

With the new update, however, it seems that recording Blackmagic RAW in 4K 2.4:1 at 75 fps

is no longer possible, now a maximum of only 60fps is possible. But since this option still appears in the updated

manual for the Pocket Cameras it is assumed that this is a bug that will be fixed in the next update.
