Blackmagic Camera App 2.1 for iOS brings many improvements

Blackmagic has released version 2.1 of its free Camera App for the iPhone, offering numerous professional features and seamlessly integrating into Blackmagic workflows, including importing recorded videos into DaVinci Resolve. The newly released version 2.1 of the Blackmagic Camera for iOS now supports the new camera control button of the iPhone 16, which can now be used in the app to start or stop recordings directly or to change camera settings such as zoom, exposure, focus, or ISO.

A handy new feature is the ability to start the Blackmagic Camera App via a shortcut from the control center, lock screen, or the camera control button. Other improvements include synchronization with Blackmagic Cloud, time-lapse recording, new recording bitrate options for the H.264 and H.265 codecs, and external monitoring via HDMI.

- Launching the app from the control center, lock screen, or camera control button.
- Support for signing into Blackmagic Cloud organization accounts.
- Display of time-lapse frequency and timecode duration in the overlay during recording.
- Off-speed recording now includes audio.
- Improved overlays indicating when off-speed mode is active.
- Option to limit HDMI monitoring to HD resolution.
- HDMI monitoring preview now remains active on all sides.
- Bitrate options for recording with the H.264 and H.265 codecs.
- Support for DockKit-compatible iPhone accessories.
- Improved timecode accuracy for Tentacle synchronization devices.
- Improved performance when recording ProRes 4K clips at high speeds on iPhone 16 Pro models.
- Improved remote monitoring performance when recording with proxies.
- Switching to the front-facing camera during recording now works with the correct orientation.
- General performance and stability improvements.

The version 2.0 of the Blackmagic Camera App introduced a host of interesting features, such as multicam recording, remote monitoring, and support for filming in HD at 100 fps on the iPhone 15 Pro.

Basic Features of the Blackmagic Camera App for iPhone


- Record in Apple ProRes, HEVC, and H.264 with automatic proxy creation
- Camera controls for frame rate, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, tint, and color space
- Focus assist, zebra, frame guides, histogram, monitoring with 3D LUTs
- Timecode recording by time or running time
- Filming in 16:9 or vertical aspect ratios
- Stealth mode for filming in 16:9 (crop) with a vertically held phone
- Audio recording in PCM, IEEE Float, or AAC with a sampling rate of 44.1 or 48 kHz
- VU or PPM audio level meters
- Thumbnail view of all recorded clips in the "Media" tab
- Clip preview with scrub position, timecode, and filename display
- Fully integrated with Blackmagic Cloud and DaVinci Resolve
- Recording to iPhone, with the option to share selected clips via Blackmagic Cloud or automatically synchronize them

The Blackmagic Camera App 2.1 is now available for download from the App Store. It requires an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision with iOS 17.0 (or visionOS 1.0) or later and at least the A12 Bionic chip. For Android smartphones, Blackmagic has just released the Camera App 1.4.
